Wilbur D. Mills University Studies High School Parent Involvement Plan 2017-2018 School Year In accordance with the Arkansas Department of Education Rules Governing Parental Involvement Plans (Act 319) I, Carlethia Houston, Parent Facilitator of Mills High School, submit the following Parental Involvement Plan for the 20172018 school year. This plan was created with the help of parents, teachers, and District employees to ensure availability of resources and information for all Mills High School parents. 1.0

Contact and Information 1.01

In order to increase parent involvement school wide, the Mills High School PTO, will establish contact with parents via a bi-monthly newsletter to begin August 2017. A. At the request of parents, the newsletter will contain information about events taking place at the school, including, but not limited to, sports, academic competitions, Fine Arts performances and club activities. B. The newsletter will be written and edited by Dr. Carlethia Houston with help from staff, PTO members, and PTO officers.

Call outs will go out to all parents concerning PTO meetings and events. Two call outs will be made for each meeting; one on the Tuesday at 6:00 pm, and Friday at 6:00 the week prior to each meeting as a reminder.

The Mills High School Website will be utilized to share information with parents and stakeholders. PTO events and meetings, as well as other important events and dates can be found under the PTO tab.

PTO Meetings 2.01

PTO meetings will take place on the campus of Mills High School the second Tuesday of every month. The meetings will begin at 5:30 pm and last no longer than one (1) hour, unless a meeting of a special committee will take place directly thereafter.

PTO meetings will serve as the primary method for informing parents and getting them involved with the school.

2.03

Parents and teachers involved in PTO will be encouraged to work together to create a safe environment for students and friendly atmosphere for more parents to get involved.

Parent Training 3.01

Parents will have four opportunities to receive training or aid in the process of navigating their teens through high school and on to adulthood. 3.01.1 HAC Two (2) Home Access Center (HAC) trainings will be offered to allow parents to sign up, access, students grades and attendance, and communicate with teachers via HAC of the State system eSchool Plus. Those trainings will be held 10/04/2017 and 02/28/2018. 3.01.2 September 2017

Ongoing “College Readiness Sessions and Workshops”

Workshop and Sessions presented by the University of Arkansas Diversity Affairs. Each session/workshop is designed to empower, educate, and equip students with information,

resources, and necessary skills for college readiness. 3.01.3 October 26, 2017

“Financial Aid Night”

Students and parents are presented with information about FAFSA, ACT, deadlines, and available scholarships. 3.01.4 January 20, 2018

“College Seminar”

This workshop is allow students to sign up for ACT testing dates, FAFSA, complete scholarship searches, and work an college entrance essays at all stages. 3.01.5 February 8, 2018

“STEAM Night”

This workshop is designed to provide parents and students with testing strategies in preparation of the upcoming ACT Aspire exam; emphasizing skills needed for literacy, math, and science. 4.0

Parent Information Center 4.01

The Parent Information Center is located on the 2 floor of the Media. The center is equipped with one desktop computer and other literature on the first floor. The center also provides parents with information regarding tutoring, wellness, next steps, and other pertinent material regarding the high school experience.

Resolving Parent Concerns Parental concern is defined as concern for the wellness and academic success of all Mills High school students, as well as concern for the overall wellness and safety of the school spirit.

Parents are encouraged to first approach the secretary of the current PTO with a request to address the issue during the monthly PTO meeting.

Additionally, parents can contact the Parent Facilitator with concerns and the facilitator will contact the secretary request to address the issue during the monthly PTO meeting.

If the concern needs the attention of the administrative staff, the Parent Facilitator will inform them.

Solutions for the issues will be created by staff members as well as parents in order to reach the best possible outcome.

Ways to Involve Parents 6.01

All teachers are encouraged to solicit the help of parents to volunteer as chaperones and helpers during fieldtrips, games, events, etc.

6.02

Parents in the PTO are encouraged to create events for students, stakeholders, and staff members to increase involvement of all of the aforementioned parties and foster an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust.

Activities and Conferences 7.01

Parent/teacher Conferences days are set by the District. Teachers are expected to participate in these events. Parents will be notified in a timely manner via call-outs and postings on the District and school websites.

ACT Aspire Bingo Night will be held spring 2018 Participants will use Bingo cards

containing subject level questions, facts or figures with a literacy, science, and math emphasis. Refreshments will be served and information will be presented about the next steps towards moving out of Priority status by increasing achievement. 7.03

The PTO will work together to create events for the staff and parents during the school year.
