Minnesota State Women’s Hockey 2014-15 Preseason Prospectus Head Coach Eric Means: Eric Means is entering his sixth season as head coach of the Minnesota State women’s hockey team. He holds an overall record of 45119-15 at MSU and a 28-101-13 WCHA record. Means has brought intensity, work ethic and a wealth of hockey knowledge to the Mavericks. He served 14 seasons as an assistant for the MSU men’s program prior to being put in charge of the women’s program in the spring of 2009.

Maverick Youth: The 2014-15 Mavericks will have to rely on their youth this season, featuring 12 freshman and four sophomores while having just eight upper classman. With at least one athlete from five different countries, including the United States, Canada, Germany, Norway, and Sweden, the 2014-15 roster is a virtual United Nations. MSU also reaches across the United States, having players as far East as New York, while extending to Arizona in the Southwest.

The Mavericks will look to build off of last year’s record of 13-23-1. The thirteen wins by MSU are the most wins in one season since the 2006-07 season when they won 16 games. Top Returners: The Mavericks lost 11 letterwinners from last year’s team, but will still return ten lettermen from a year ago. Senior Kathleen Rogan (Vancouver, B.C.) returns after finishing fourth on the team in points with 21. She tied for first on the team in goals scored (11) and was fourth in assists (10). She led the team in power-play goals with five and in game-winning goals with four. She also holds the school record with three hat tricks in her career. Senior, defenseman Shelby Monteyunas (Cicero, N.Y.), who produced three goals and 10 assists last season, led all Maverick blueliners with 54 shots and was second in points with 13 in 2013-14.

Above: The Mavericks took on the Golden Gophers during the 2014 Hockey City Classic. The game was played on January 17th at TCF Back Stadium on the campus of the University of Minnesota.

2014-15 Schedule: MSU begins the season at home with two games against North Dakota and a homeand-home series with St. Cloud State. They then face its first non-conference opponent, traveling to Mercyhurst for two games. They will finish up the 2014 calendar year with 10-straight WCHA contests. After the New Year, MSU play’s two non-conference opponents, beginning with St. Lawrence at All Seasons Arena before traveling to St. Charles, Mo., to battle Lindenwood. The Mavericks close out the regular season with 14 conference matchups. The first round of the WCHA Playoffs is slated for February 27th.
