Principal’s Corner—From the Desk of Mr. Boxey Now that we are into the third week of October and the leaves are falling, summer seems like a distant memory. MJHS has been buzzing since August, and staff and students are definitely back into the swing of things. The school year started by welcoming over 100 students to Meridian Jr. High School during our fifth grade and new student orientation before Labor Day. The MJHS Student Council enjoyed making their Homecoming banner, and many of our students enjoyed walking or riding in the parade. The day was much cooler than last year, but the parade was still a fun community event. Our student athletes have been hard at work this season. The volleyball and cross country seasons are already coming to a close in the next couple of weeks, and basketball will be starting soon. The MJHS staff hosted an open house the week before school started, the Family Fun Night was a huge success, and the staff once again invites parents back to campus on Thursday, November 8th from 12 - 3:00 p.m. and 4:30 - 8:00 p.m. for Parent/Teacher Conferences.

Studying Deer Overpopulation Staying Up-to-Date Parents can stay up-to-date on their students’ grades by logging into Echo. Parents should call the MJHS office at 687-3360 if they don’t have their username and password.

Robotics This year marks the third season of the 7th & 8th grade robotics team. The team has been meeting for five weeks, and they are working hard preparing for their competition on November 3rd at Bullock Creek.

Mrs. Sprague’s, Mr. Henderson’s, and Mr. Haney’s sixth grade science classes have recently launched a new project about Michigan’s Whitetail Deer population. Students will first learn how ecologists estimate animal populations, and then the class will study factors that influence the population of a species. After learning about the problems associated with deer overpopulation, the class will research a variety of methods of controlling the deer community. The project will wrap up in early November as groups of students debate which plan of action is best for preserving, conserving, and protecting Michigan’s Whitetail Deer population. This is a great example of how MJHS uses Project Based Learning to connect what students learn to the world around them. By applying what they learn to a real-world local issue, students will be more motivated to learn, will retain more information, and will gain critical thinking skills along the way. If you have a sixth grader, stay up-to-date on this project by reading the daily agendas on Echo and by talking with your student each night.

Mustang Corral The Mustang Corral is published four times per year and is emailed to those parents that have an email address on file in the MJHS office.

Parent/Teacher Conferences Parent/Teacher Conferences at MJHS will be on Thursday, November 8th from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m. and 4:30 - 8:00 p.m. Conferences at MJHS are on a drop-in basis.
