Month 1– Create one tree block (see page 14 in book.) The units that you will be making are 4 patch and flying geese units. For improved accuracy pre-starch your fabrics with best press, cut using a sharp new rotary blade and an accurate ruler. Use a 1/4” presser foot and high quality 50wt cotton thread for piecing. While pressing your fabric, use a dry iron (no steam) on cotton setting. Flying geese units can be made a variety of ways. The Bloc-Loc method has you make the unit larger and then trim to size using the Bloc-Loc ruler. The ruler for this class is the Flying Geese Unit 1 x 2” finished. Cutting: From the 2 1/2” x 10” assorted fabrics cut : Twenty eight – 2 1/8” squares for flying geese units, sub-cut Four 1 3/4” squares Twenty four 1 1/2” squares for four patch units From the 4” x 10” green fabrics cut : Three 3 1/2” squares for flying geese (no waste method) - please cut out first Eight 1 1/2” squares for patchwork in tree block From the brown fabric cut: One 1 1/2” x 2 1/2” for trunk One 1 3/4” x 2 3/4” square for traditional goose unit From Background cut: Two 2 1/2” x 4 1/2”, Two 1 1/2” x 5 1/2” and Two 2 1/2” x 8 1/2” for tree block Twelve 1 1/2” squares for patchwork in tree block Three 3 1/2” squares for flying geese (no waste method) One 1 3/4” x 2 3/4” rectangle for one flying goose unit traditional method Two 1 1/2” x 2 1/2” for patchwork in tree block Assembly: Four Patch Units– Following directions on page 13, sew four 1 1/2” squares together. Create six scrappy four patch units. Flying geese units-Following pictures on pages 14-16. We are cutting fabrics differently than in the book in order to do the Bloc-Loc Method. There are two methods 1) Traditional method 2) No-waste method, both finish squaring using the Bloc-Loc. The traditional method will make 1 flying goose unit at a time and the no waste method will make 4 flying geese units at a time. The traditional method pairs one 1 3/4” x 2 3/4” rectangle with two 1 3/4” squares (Yields one unit) The no waste method pairs one 3 1/2” square with four 2 1/8” squares (Yields 4 units) Following the directions on the back, pair the squares and make flying geese. The goose part of the unit will vary (green, brown and background) Traditional Method

Flying geese units: Two methods using the Bloc-Loc Ruler. Both methods result in a flying goose unit that is larger and trimmed to size using the ruler. The ruler trims each angle on the bottom of the unit and the 1/4” seam across the top. The end result is a very straight and square block that is accurate. Traditional Method: Yields One at a time
No Waste Method: Yields Four at a time. 1 Large square (3 1/2”) and 4 small squares (2 1/8”) will equal 4 flying geese units.
Assemble the tree block following the directions on page 14-16*. (* pg 15, #5 do not put star points on)
