Modern Christmas Sampler Block of the Month Simple Christmas Tidings Month 2– Create all five star blocks and 48 Flying geese blocks for the border and the stars. The stars are made of two styles A (see page 14 in book.) and Star B (see page 46). The star blocks are 4 1/2” square unfinished blocks. The center units for the stars are 4 patch and square in a square units. Assemble 28 flying geese units for half of the border (see page 55 for inspiration). One row of 14 and one row of 13. (one will be left over) Assemble 5 star blocks. Two star blocks will have a scrappy 4 patch in the center, one star block will have a solid 2 1/2 “ square in the center and two blocks will have a square in a square as the center. Cutting: From the 4” x 10” assorted fabrics cut : Three – 2 1/2” squares for star centers. please cut out first Forty eight– 2 1/8” squares for flying geese units Eight—1 1/2” squares for 4 patch star centers From Background cut: Twelve 3 1/2” squares for flying geese (no waste method) Eight 1 1/2” squares for square in a square star centers Star Four Patch Units– Following directions on page 13, sew four 1 1/2” squares together. Create 2 scrappy four patch units for the star centers.

Star Solid Center– Reserve one solid 2 1/2” square for a star center. This is perfect for fussy cutting or embroidery in the center. Star Square in a Square Center– Refer to page 46. Make 2 star centers follow directions Step 1 and 2. Flying geese units-. We are cutting fabrics differently than in the book in order to do the Bloc-Loc Method. The no waste method pairs one 3 1/2” square with four 2 1/8” different squares (Yields 4 units) Following the directions on the back, pair the squares and make flying geese. The sky part of the unit will all be from the kit. No Waste Method: Yields Four at a time. 1 Large square (3 1/2”) and 4 small squares (2 1/8”) will equal 4 flying geese units. Trim with 1” x 2” Bloc-Loc Flying Geese ruler.

Once you have 48 flying geese units. Set aside 28 for the border and 20 for the stars. Make two stars with 4 patch center, 2 with square in a square and one solid center.
