Cut the Fabric Cut the following using a rotary cutter, mat and ruler: ♦ Main fabric: two 13” x 18” rectangles ♦ Coordinating fabric: two 13” x 18” rectangles ♦ Insul-Bright or batting: two 13” x 18” rectangles ♦ Pocket fabric: eight 6” x 6” squares ♦ Bias fabric: 2 bias strips approximately 12” long

Stitch the appliqué placement stitches. Place the appliqué fabric over the outline stitches.
Open Modern Mix design #07. Rotate 45°. Rescale proportionally 84% to 75mm x 122mm.
Stitch the appliqué outline.

Spray AquaTear with 101 Quilt Basting Spray and hoop with sticky side up. Center and gently smooth one 6” x 6” fabric square onto the stabilizer. Place the hoop on the embroidery machine. Stitch a basting box around the design.
(Trim excess fabric from around stitching. Continue embroidering the appliqué stitches.)

Lightly spray the wrong side of each appliquéd pocket with 101 Quilt Basting Spray. Attach the facing fabric. Trim the pockets to 4” x 5” and round off the upper right corner of each left pocket. Repeat for the right pockets, rounding the upper left corners. Set up the sewing machine with Binder Attachment #84 and Foot #94. Change the needle position to 2 steps left of center. Bind the curved edges of each pocket.

Layer the Insul-Bright/batting, placemat back and placemat top (right sides together).

Stitch around all four sides of each placemat using a ½” seam allowance, and leaving a 4” opening in the center of the lower edge for turning. Turn placemats right side out and use a point presser to push out the corners. Fold in the seam allowances at the opening; pin and press. Using Edgestitch Foot #10/10C/10D, topstitch around the outer edges of each placemat. (This stitching will also close the opening.)
