Mosaic Terracotta Pot Kit Welcome This is two kits in one. First, you get the pleasure and creative challenge of making a beautiful mosaic pot. Then you make a candle in it! Both steps are surprisingly simple but incredibly satisfying. We hope you have fun creating your own candles. Please let us know how you get on, what you learn and any ideas you might have at [email protected].

Take Care Making candles involves heat so you need to be careful. This kit is not suitable for young children and any under 18s should be carefully supervised. Wax should never be heated over a naked flame or it might ignite. Never leave melting wax unattended and take great care when handling molten wax. When you come to burning your candles, make sure you do so on a flat surface and never leave them unattended.

1 x Primed Terracotta Pot ( 11cm diameter ) 30 x Mixed Quadra Classic Glass Tiles 7 x Glass Beads 1 x 25ml tube Silicon Glue 200gms White Waterproof Grout 400g Pro-C Container wax 5g Dye 2 self centring tabs 20cm Wick Blutack

What you will need Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ

Old plastic container for mixing the grout in Water to mix the grout with Old spoon or spatula to mix the grout with A small sponge or damp cloth to clean the grout off the tiles Newspaper to put on your surface to save it from glue and grout Rubber or latex gloves (optional)

You also need two saucepans (one large, one small). These can be old or cheap but mustn’t be used subsequently for food. Finally, you’ll need scissors, kitchen scales, a pencil and, ideally, a set of pliers.

Notes Please take great care in handling the tiles as they are made of glass and have sharp edges. Your pot has been fully primed to give it more durability. It can be used indoors or outdoors as all the materials used are weatherproof. You have 1 extra tile and 1 extra bead in case of breakages. Try not to rush the gluing of the tiles as they will end up slipping down if not stuck properly If you make your grout too runny then leave it for 10 minutes to harden and then stir. Keep doing this until it is the right thickness. Allow plenty of time and read all the instructions before starting as this pot will require timed attention once you get going.

Mosaic Instructions Cover your table with newspaper before you begin. Before you start to glue on your tiles and beads its best to work out your pattern. The tiles will fit in 3 rows. First Row = 11 tiles and 2 beads Second Row = 10 tiles and 2 beads Third Row = 8 tiles and 2 beads It’s best to lay them out in the 3 rows on the table first so that you can mix and match the blues and beads. Try and keep the pot in a laying down position rather than standing it up so that the tiles don’t slip down. Start with the top row - Place a small blob of glue where you are placing the tile then stick it on (rough side down) and hold it for a few seconds until it sticks. Make sure the tiles are flush with the top edge of the pot/bottom of rim. Leave approx a 5mm gap between each tile. Do the bottom row next – Line up the bottom edge of the tiles with the bottom edge of the pot. Then add the middle row – leave an even gap between the top and bottom tiles (it’ll be approx 5mm again).

When all tiles and beads are stuck down, then leave it to dry for about an hour. Before grouting check that all tiles and beads are fully stuck down and cannot be removed. If you have any loose ones then re-glue and wait another hour before you apply the grout. If you want to wear gloves then put them on ready for preparing the grout as it does get quite messy! Tip 75% of the grout into your plastic container and just add very small amounts of water (dessert spoonfuls) mixing all the time until it’s the thickness of whipped cream. Keep a little grout back to thicken the mixture if necessary. It is important that you don’t make the mixture too runny as it will slide out of the gaps between the tiles. Thicker is better than thinner. Hold the pot by the rim on its side and add the grout to the pot/tiles with your fingers pushing it into all of the gaps. Once all the gaps are filled then turn the pot upside down and make sure the bottom row of tiles are filled with grout underneath. Do not grout the rim of the pot or the base. Grout a wick tab over the hole at the bottom of the pot to seal the base on the inside. Make sure you have filled all the gaps up to the level of the tiles as you will end up with dips if not filled enough. It will all look very messy but don’t worry to much as it will be sponged clean later. Turn the pot upside down and leave to dry for 45-60 minutes – no longer. Do not throw away the left over grout as you may need it later if you notice any gaps when cleaning it off. After the hour then use a damp sponge and gently wipe off any extra grout from the tiles and clean it up leaving a smooth finish between the tiles. Clean off any grout that has gone on the rim of the pot and the base. Leave to dry for another hour then wipe again and then buff it up with a tea towel. It’s best to leave your pot for 24 hours before you fill it with candle wax.

Candle Making Instructions 1.

Fill your larger saucepan to a third of its volume with water and bring it to the boil

2.

In the meantime, thread your wick through the bottom of a tab, leaving only a millimetre or so showing

3.

Using pliers or (very carefully) scissors, pinch the collar of the tab to fix the wick in place and then trim

4.

Put your block of wax into the smaller pan

5.

Once the large saucepan has begun to simmer, place the small saucepan inside it so that the wax inside it can begin to melt. Stir continuously.

6.

Once the wax has fully melted, add dye.Stir until it melts.

7.

(optional) Using your pipette, measure out 5ml of oil and add to the melted wax

8.

Pour a small amount into the bottom of the pot and drop the wicked tab into it - making sure it’s central and there are no leaks

9.

Once the wax in the pot has dried, pour the remaining wax into the pot - fill it to around 80%

10. To straighten your wick, lay the pencil over the pot, pull the wick taught and fasten it with blutack - make it as central as possible 11. Leave the pot for a couple of hours to cool and harden 12. You will notice that the centre has dipped as the wax has cooled. Reheat your remaining wax in your saucepans and top the candle up. Don’t overfillleave a few millimetres gap at the top. 13. Leave the candles to set for at least 4 hours and preferably overnight before lighting it. Trim the wick to around 1 cm.
