fun facts about rainbows The colours of the rainbow are caused by light rays from the sun hitting raindrops and separating into light fractions. A rainbow is always in front of you when your back is to the sun. Is there a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow? This tale originates centuries ago in eastern Europe. It was said that the angels put the gold there and that only a nude man could retrieve the treasure - how naughty! North America saw a rainbow as a bridge between the living and the dead.

what your child can learn. . . .

Place the compost blocks in the pots in an empty sink. Add water and watch the blocks grow like magic. Level the compost. Choose your seed flower colour to suit your pot colour (eg. Flax for red pot) and scatter a few seeds sparingly across the surface. You can use any surplus seeds in further pots (Fun to Grow pots are ideal) or plant them direct outside. Place pots on a warm windowsill but not in direct sunshine (15-18°C - 60-65°F) and cover with paper. Keep moist and when the tiny plants appear, carefully tease out the other little plants to leave one central one. Again you can transplant your spare plants into other pots or trays. Grow on a well lit windowsill in a cooler room (15°C-60°F). When your plants are approximately 10-15cm (4-6") high in June-July, plant them out in the garden, together with any others you have grown, 15cm (6") apart. Your ‘Rainbow’ plants will grow quickly - water them well in dry weather. See your Rainbow coloured flowers from late June to September.
