Mothering Sunday Kyrie Confessions
Opening Hymn We sing a love that sets all people free, That blows like wind, that burns like scorching flame, Enfolds like earth, springs up like water clear. Come, living love, live in our hearts today.
You made us to be one family,
We sing a love that seeks another's good That longs to serve and not to count the cost, A love that yielding finds itself made new. Come, caring love, live in our hearts today.
You were born a Jew to reconcile all people,
yet we have divided humanity. Lord, have mercy. Kyrie eleison (repeat after cantor)
yet we have brought disharmony amongst races. Christ, have mercy. Christe eleison (repeat after cantor)
We sing a love, unflinching, unafraid To be itself despite another's wrath, A love that stands alone and undismayed. Come, strengthening love, live in our hearts today. We seek a burning, fiery, Holy One, That seeks out shades of ancient bitterness. Transfigure these as Christ in every heart, Come, joyful love, live in our hearts today. Tune: Woodlands
Words: June Boyce-Tillman
CCL 188440
You rejoice in our differences, yet we make them a cause of enmity. Lord, have mercy. Kyrie eleison (repeat after cantor)
Collect God of love, passionate and strong, tender and careful: watch over us and hold us all the days of our life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Post-Communion Prayer
Today our bible readings are four stories, examples of women’s and God’s mothering : 1. The Birth of Moses – Moses is saved (Exodus 2.110 2. The story of Ruth (Ruth 1-4) 3. Jesus’ mother asks him to help a wedding couple. He turn water into wine (John 2.1-11 ) 4. Jesus’ mother is standing under the cross with her friends (John 19:25b-27) As truly as God is our father, so just as truly is he our mother. In our father, God almighty, we have our being; in our merciful mother, we are remade and restored….’it is I, the strength and goodness of fatherhood. It is I, the light and grace of holy love. It is I, the Trinity, it is I, the unity’. Julian of Norwich ( 1342-1416)
Loving God, as a mother feeds her children at the breast, you feed us in this sacrament with the food and drink of eternal life: help us who have tasted your goodness to grow in grace within the household of faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Closing Hymn 1. Fathers and mothers, sisters and brothers, All those who love us, for whom we care: Help and befriend them, keep and defend them, Jesus our Saviour, this is our prayer. 2. And for those others, fathers and mothers, Children who hunger, they must be fed: We would be caring, readily sharing One with another our daily bread. 3. Sisters and brothers, fathers and mothers, We who together offer our praise: Hear our thanksgiving, God ever living, May we walk with you all of our days. CCL 18844 Timothy Dudley Smith
