Motorola Droid X Camera Replacement

Step 1 — Rear Case 

Objective: remove the rear case from the Motorola Droid X phone. 

This is what the Motorola Droid X looks like before disassembly. In the front, there is a large LCD touch screen.

INSTRUCTION: Turn the phone over so that the back faces up.

Objective: remove the battery casing plate. 

The case plate has a push and slide mechanism.

INSTRUCTION 1: Push on the upper side of the casing located under the camera lens.



INSTRUCTION 2: Slide down the battery case plate.

INSTRUCTION: Insert your finger tips into the edges of the opening and pull the casing off.



Objective: remove the battery from the battery compartment.

Step 7 

INSTRUCTION: Grab the red tab that says "Battery Release" and slowly lift it up. This will remove the battery.



Objective: remove two small black screws from the back of the phone.

Step 8

 These two (2) screws help hold the phone together. They need to be removed by a Phillips Hex 2mm screwdriver,

INSTRUCTION: Remove two black screws from the back of the phone.



Objective: remove the two plastic pieces in front of the phone - they cover the remaining screws.

Step 10

 The two plastic pieces are clipped onto the phone as covers. They are located at the top and the bottom of the phone.

INSTRUCTION: Flip the phone over to the front side.



INSTRUCTION: Use the iFixit tool as a crowbar to pry the top plastic cover piece off of the phone. It will pop off.

INSTRUCTION: Use the iFixit tool as a crowbar to pry the bottom plastic piece off the phone.



Objective: remove four white screws from the corners of the screen.

Step 14

 These four (4) screws help hold the phone together. Use a Phillips Hex 2mm screwdriver

INSTRUCTION: remove the 2 white screws from the upper corners of the screen.



INSTRUCTION: remove the 2 white screws from the lower corners of the screen.

Step 17 

Objective: remove the rear case from the phone in order to provide access to inside the phone. 

The phone is now held together by the casing alone. You need to pop the two halves apart.

INSTRUCTION: Use the iFixit tool like a crowbar to pry apart the front and rear halves of the casing. They will pop apart.

Now you are ready to access the internal circuits of the phone.

Step 20 — Motherboard



The objective of the guide is to remove the motherboard from the camera.

 The mother board is an L-shaped green circuit board.

Step 21 

In order to start, the rear case should have been removed. Follow the rear case removal guide for that procedure.



Let's start. The objective of the following two steps is to remove the circuit connectors connected to the mother board.

Step 22

 They are "clip-on" type connectors which have a black leathery coating. The connectors are located at the lower bottom left part of the "L-Shaped" motherboard.

 There are two connectors with the larger one overlapping the smaller one. You can disconnect them either by hand or with the iFixit tool.

Step 23 

INSTRUCTION: Disconnect the larger connector on the top by pulling on the edge of the black coated connector. It will pop off.

INSTRUCTION: The smaller connector will become visible once the larger one is disconnected. Disconnect it also the same way as before.

Objective: disconnect the white wire connected to the motherboard.

 The wire is visible at the upper left of the "L-shaped" Motherboard. Each end of the white wire is connected by a circular pop-on connector.

INSTRUCTION: Grab and pull up on the silver connector that is at the end of the white wire connected to the motherboard until it pops off.

Objective: separate the motherboard from the rest of the phone.

 The motherboard is held in place by two silver clasps on the left side of the phone.

INSTRUCTION: Use the iFixit tool to pry the clasps open. This will free the motherboard from the case.

Objective: detach the camera component from the phone.

 The camera component is located at the upper left part of the phone, right above the white wire mentioned previously. The camera is square.

INSTRUCTION: Grab the camera component and pull it out of its casing. Keep the camera connected to the mother board.

Objective: disconnect a circuit connector from underneath the motherboard to finish the process. 

The circuit connector is a gold and black colored "clip-on" type connector located in the middle left side of the phone. It is connected to the underside of the motherboard.

INSTRUCTION: Slowly lift up the motherboard as you would turn a page. 

INSTRUCTION: Use your fingertips to grab a edge of the connector and pop it off.



Conclusion: Now, you have successfully removed the motherboard.



At this point, you will be left with the following: 2 black screws, 4 silver screws, 1 motherboard, 1 camera, 1 rear case, 1 battery, 2 plastic pieces from the front case, and the rest of the phone.

Step 35 — Camera 

The objective of the guide is to replace the camera component on the motherboard.



In order to start, the motherboard should have been separated from the rest of the phone.

Objective: separate the existing camera component from the motherboard. 

The camera component is connected to the rear side of the top left of the motherboard. The connector is a black colored tab which is a pop on type mechanism.

It is up side up is when it looks like the capital letter L.

INSTRUCTION: Pull on the edges of the black connector tab and pop it off.



OBJECTIVE: Attach the replacement camera component to the motherboard.

INSTRUCTION: Pop on black connector tab of the new component at the same place where the existing one was removed.



Conclusion: You have finished replacing the camera component of your phone.
