Journalism Unit The big idea for the writing unit is that feature articles present a combination of fact with disguised opinion. Students will learn what an angled thesis statement is and its purpose, they will learn what should be included within an introduction, they will critique the evidence selected in a feature article, and they will discuss the process an author must use to determine which evidence should be included within a feature article.

In social studies, students will continue to discuss the geological history of the Western Hemisphere. They will be able to tell how the geography of the Western Hemisphere is unique and how the geological processes shape the physical environments of the Western Hemisphere.

Chapter 3 - Fractions and Mixed Numbers The students will be learning to add and subtract unlike fractions and mixed numbers. They will also apply their knowledge of problem solving throughout this unit as well. In addition, the fifth grade will be learning about the relationship between fractions, mixed numbers, division expressions, and decimals. Students will express division expressions as fractions and mixed numbers, as well as express fractions, division expressions and mixed numbers as decimals. Learning how to express numbers in many different ways is a very important skill to acquire as they progress as mathematicians.
