Welcome to Mississippi Valley Storm Soccer Mississippi Valley Storm (MVS) Soccer Club offers youth ages 10-19 the opportunity to play at a highly competitive level. MVS’s charter is to provide competitive soccer and to enhance player development for all area youth. MVS accepts players from multiple communities throughout the tri-state area including La Crescent, La Crosse, Onalaska, Holmen, West Salem, Caledonia, Decorah, Sparta, Tomah, and many others. The season, including pre-season practice, typically runs from late May to late July, though some teams are able to schedule practices even earlier. MVS teams play in South District leagues administered by the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association (MYSA), traveling as far as Minneapolis/St. Paul and suburbs. Games are usually played on two weeknights with teams practicing on two other weeknights. Few weekend games are involved unless teams opt to participate in tournaments or if we need to reschedule a game due to weather. Car-pooling is organized for away games and home games are played at various fields in La Crescent, Caledonia and La Crosse. Teams are formed by age, gender and skill level. There are no tryouts and team rosters are determined by the Director of Coaching with the assistance of club coaching staff. Teams are placed in one of four competitive levels - Classic 3 is the least competitive and Premier is the most competitive. Traditionally, most MVS teams have participated at the C1 and C2 levels. Four MVS teams have won state championships and three MVS teams have won promotion to the Premier level. MVS Director of Coaching Ed Hoskin aims to continue cultivating a stellar collection of highly qualified coaches from the region. Many are area high school or college coaches or have played at the college level. Hoskin believes the club’s exceptional coaching experience has played a huge part in MVS’s past successes. MVS Soccer Club is a wonderful way for your child to further develop and enjoy playing soccer in a highly structured and competitive environment. It allows players and parents to meet people from other communities, travel and share a love of soccer.

Frequently Asked Questions When do practices start? Practices are twice a week and usually start the last week of the spring soccer season in late May, though some teams begin earlier. Practice times are determined by the coach and typically take place in La Crescent, though we also use other fields, including Caledonia and the Viterbo Soccer Complex in La Crosse. How long is the summer soccer season? First games are usually in early June. The season runs through July, and teams play in the MYSA playoffs in mid-July. The state tournament takes place in late July. Who will be the coach? Summer coaches are assigned by MVS’s Director of Coaching and Player Development (Ed Hoskin). Coaches are experienced and qualified, and many coach at the high school or college level or have college playing experience. These coaches are paid by MVS. At the early ages, coaches will work on fundamental skills such ball control, passing, dribbling and other basic skills. As players progress, we look to incorporate a greater tactical understanding of the game. How important is it to start soccer training early? In soccer, the earlier you master fundamental skills, the faster players can move onto more advanced training. It is a huge advantage to start training with professional coaches, and playing competitive soccer, at earlier ages. Example: This year, MVS will have three teams playing at the C1 level, and these teams started playing summer league at the U12 level. College coaches generally take more notice of kids that play at the C1 and Premier level. Do I have to give up my weekends? NO. We try everything possible to ‘not’ play weekend games. But sometimes due to weather circumstances, rescheduling, we may have to play an occasional game on a weekend. We try to keep weekends as family time as much as possible. Coaches may inquire of families about scheduling a Sunday evening practice if a team plays the following evening or has an important game coming up, but this is ‘not’ the norm. What nights do they play games? Games are played either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday. If we know ahead of time of missing players, we will reschedule the game. Games usually start at 7:00 pm. What level will we play at in the first year? MYSA has four levels: C3, C2, C1 and Premier. We generally start new teams at C3 and move up from there through MYSA’s system of promotion and relegation. There are only six teams at the Premier level for each age group in the entire state. MVS has had Premier teams in the past. Page 3
Do we play tournaments? The option of playing additional tournaments is determined by parents. It is not a requirement to play these tournaments. The MYSA playoffs and state tournament fees are paid for by MVS. How much traveling is involved? Amount of travel is determined by where other teams are formed. MVS plays in the South District of MYSA’s various regions. MVS teams may play in either Winona, La Crosse, Rochester, Byron, Austin, Albert Lea, Owatonna, or several of the southern suburb Minneapolis teams. There are usually 5 or 6 away games on the schedule. Typically, most parents also use carpooling when they travel. Are there tryouts? NO. MVS accepts players on a first come, first serve basis. The following year we offer roster spots to returning players FIRST. Are there volunteer hour requirements? NO. How much does it cost? Registration fee is $310. You can register on-line at www.mississippivalleysoccer.org Are there extra costs? Players need to purchase MVS socks, MVS home and away jersey and MVS shorts that will be offered by MVS. Jerseys will have player’s number and name printed on the back. Socks, jersey and shorts may be used in future years. Each player should have cleats and shin guards. Everything else is optional equipment.
Registration For returning players, it is MVS policy to guarantee a roster spot if the registration payment is made before December 1st. If a player is registering for a MVS team for the first time, open roster spots available after December 1st. All roster decisions are made by MVS Director of Coaching and staff.

MVS Play Up Policy LYSA/MVS looks to place players at their own age level whenever possible. However, in some circumstances, players may be given the opportunity to play up one or two years in the interests of team organization or if a player is deemed sufficiently skilled, in the opinion of the club’s Director of Coaching (DOC), that he/she may not be challenged at another age level. In exceptional circumstances, the DOC may permit players to play up more than two years, but only with a statement from a parent/guardian acknowledging that the level of play is likely to be more physical and challenging, and that LYSA/MVS and its representatives will not be held responsible or liable for any event that may occur as a result. Additionally, U8 and younger players can’t register on a U11 or older team, per LYSA/MVS and MYSA rules. Field Locations

MVS Olympic Development Program Recipients The US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program has been in existence since 1977. The program was introduced to help identify potential national team youth players through an organized series of trials which begins at the district level, progresses through the state, region and finally the national level. The program also serves as a means of development as the players identified are brought together for training and prepared for interstate, interregional and international competitions. The development of the players is taking place rapidly as talented players are brought together for training and competition at all levels. Training and playing with those of equal or greater ability is a tremendous teaching tool. The program is open to any youth player. The higher up the ladder a player progresses, the more intense the training and playing become. The regional teams experience both interregional and international competitions on an annual basis. A pool of players is selected for each age group with the rosters changing each year as players develop at different rates. Regional players have traveled to Florida, Las Vegas, San Diego, France, England, Costa Rica, Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands. While the US Youth Soccer ODP is one vehicle for development and identification, it is not the only method. All programs work together to help the players attain their ultimate potential. The US Youth Soccer ODP does provide a systematic method that allows players to advance as far as their abilities allow. It serves as a form of self-evaluation in a system that is recognized by coaches at all levels. The following MVS players received ODP recognition in 2012 and 2013. Anna Brown Boston Gilberg Brianna Cochlin Brielle Bierman Darius Namazi Ethan Modawell Kylie Olson Madison Merrill Michaela Todd Sam Naik Sidney Ion Stephanie Harpenau

MVS Team Achieves Premier Status for 2009 The La Crescent-based U17 Mississippi Valley Storm won a South District championship at the Classic 1 level in August 2008. The team then gained promotion to the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association’s six-team Premier division by having one of the best records among district winners at MYSA’s state tournament at the National Sports Center in Blaine. “It’s a huge achievement,” MVS Director of Coaching Scott Pirnstill said. “It’s definitely one of the best teams that has ever been assembled in this area. They’re very organized, athletic and highly skilled.” The Storm, coached by Viterbo University Men’s Soccer Coach Andy Lee, is represented by players from La Crescent, Onalaska, West Salem and Tomah. The team posted a 10-1-1 record in the regular season before going 1-1 at state. “It’s always been the goal to get these players to this level,” Lee said. “We won with a lot of quality, and tactically, the team took a big step this year.” This marks the third time a MVS team has reached the Premier level since 2004. Next summer’s U-18 team will play against teams from Eden Prairie, White Bear Lake, Woodbury (two teams) and New Hope/Plymouth.
