National Letter of Intent Purpose

What is the National Letter of Intent? 



The NLI is a voluntary program with regard to both institutions and student-athletes. No prospective student-athlete (PSA) or parent/guardian is required to sign the National Letter of Intent (NLI), and no institution is required to join the program. Currently, NLI membership includes 635 DI and DII institutions.

What is the National Letter of Intent? 





The NLI is a binding agreement between a prospective student-athlete and an NLI member institution. The prospective student-athlete (PSA) agrees to attend the institution full-time for one academic year. Institution agrees to provide athletics financial aid for one academic year.

Benefits 







Once the NLI is signed all other *member institutions must cease recruiting activity towards that PSA The ban remains in effect until the PSA enrolls at the signing institution For the PSA, the NLI secures athletic financial aid with that institution for that academic year. It does not guarantee a spot on the team or playing time. *Note: Ivy League, Service Academies, DIII, NAIA, prep schools and junior colleges are not members of the NLI program

Institution issues a NLI and offer of athletics aid to the PSA. PSA signs two copies; keeps one copy and returns the other to the institution. The NLI must be signed within seven (7) days of the issue date.  Early

The institution verifies all of the required information (names, date, time) and sends it to the conference office for validation. The NLI must be filed with the conference office within 14 days of the final signature. May not be signed prior to the signing dates for the applicable sport.  NLI

may be put together and sent earlier

Signing Periods 



In circumstances where a PSA’s primary sport is not football, but anticipates participating in football, the PSA should delay signing a NLI until the football signing period or during the regular signing period for his sport(s). A PSA who signs a NLI during the early period will be ineligible for practice & competition in football during the first year of enrollment.

National Letter of Intent Need to Know Info

Two-Year College with an NLI If a PSA signs an NLI and later attends a junior college, he/she would have to graduate from the junior college: 1.

To satisfy NCAA 2-4 or 4-2-4 transfer rules, if necessary to meet NCAA, conference or institutional regulations To null and void a previously signed NLI

Two-Year College with No NLI 



If a PSA did not sign an NLI prior to enrolling at a junior college, he/she is permitted to sign while attending a junior college. If the PSA was deemed a nonqualifier by the NCAA, he/she may not sign an NLI in the first year of enrollment at the junior college

Multiyear Grant-in-Aid 



Can offer a PSA athletic aid for a multiyear period (cannot exceed 5 year clock). NLI with a multiyear grant-in-aid must have a scholarship value more than $0 for the year that the NLI is being signed for.

Invalid vs. Null & Void 



If the NLI is declared invalid, a PSA is permitted to sign another NLI during the same signing year. Ex: PSA forgot to include time of signing or returned the NLI after the deadline





If the NLI is declared null and void, a PSA is not permitted to sign another NLI until the next signing year. Ex: PSA is deemed a nonqualifier or chooses to attend a 2 year institution.

Submitting a Valid NLI  



  

Must include the NCAA ID number Must be accompanied by an athletics financial aid agreement If the PSA is under the age of 21, a parent/legal guardian signature must be included Has to be signed within 7 days of the issue date. Must include the date and time of signature Submitted to the conference office within 14 days of final signature

Null & Void 

 





One year absence – Signee does not enroll in any institution for at least one academic year and the scholarship (in its same amount) is no longer available. PSA is denied admission PSA does not meet NCAA, institutional or conference eligibility requirements The sport is discontinued/no longer offered Recruiting rules violation

After signing an NLI with DI University during the regular signing period, Roy Munson receives a written denial of admission from the institution. What is the status of his NLI? Null & Void. The NLI becomes null and void once the PSA has received this information. The same applies if the PSA is deemed a nonqualifier by the NCAA Eligibility Center.

Can an NLI be hand delivered to the PSA by a coach or an institutional representative off campus? No. If the PSA is off campus, the NLI can only be sent via; express mail, courier service, regular mail, fax or e-mail. Note: On campus, a PSA may sign an NLI during an official or an unofficial visit.
