Gisborne Girls‟ High School has a school uniform that most students wear with pride. The recent survey that was conducted gave us really good feedback. In this supplement I have included the results of the survey as well as some information about the uniform rules as there were some people who were unsure about a few aspects. Thank you to everyone who responded. For the big question about whether Year 13 should be allowed to wear mufti, the BOT has decided to leave the policy unchanged for 2016 although the standard of mufti will be more enforced.
UNIFORM SURVEY RESULTS Surveys were sent out to whanau, students and staff who have an email address. There was a very good response with 160 whanau, 142 students and 40 teacher responses. We can therefore be satisfied that we have a broad range of opinions covered. In the student survey however, the responses came mainly from senior students (96.5%). Perhaps that is indicative of the particular focus currently on the Year 13 Mufti issue. Responses: 1. Do you agree with Gisborne Girls’ High School having a school uniform? This question resulted in a resounding endorsement from all three groups for our school having a school uniform. 98.1% whanau, 86.5% students and 92.1% teachers agree with us having a uniform. 2. The next set of questions asked if people approved of the various elements of the current uniform. Percentage approval (%)

We can therefore be very satisfied that, apart from perhaps the red jersey, our current uniform is approved by a large proportion of our school community. In particular, the senior uniform is very popular and the introduction of this option back in 2008 was a big success. 3. One of the changes being considered is to remove the mufti option from Year 13 students. Do you approve of this? Response:

There was an interesting difference for this question with the teachers being of the opposite opinion to the students and their whanau. However, as stated above there will be no change for 2016.

In each question in the survey there was a space to add comments and there were plenty of contributions made. 4. Have you any suggestions about changes to our uniform that you would like us to consider? There were a range of suggestions such as: have the senior uniform for all levels, or make the senior uniform for Y12 & 13 as at GBHS. Long sleeve shirt options different fabric (polar fleece?) for the red jerseys ties, and possibly blazers, for seniors school rainproof jacket with school logo shorts option; straight skirt option; black track pants winter / summer uniform summer dress or pinafore black cardigans for all levels with polos (juniors) and blouses (seniors) 5. Do you have any suggestions for Year 13s if they are to go back into uniform? different top and/or skirt blazers; Year 13 badge 6. Do you have any other comments about our school uniform? too much variability with footwear very expensive if we stay with mufti we need to raise the standard of acceptable clothes it is a privilege to wear mufti in Year 13 which should not be taken away If everyone is in uniform it will make our school look tidier and there is no judgement if there is to be a change it should be from 2017 thinking of mufti every day is too hard thank you for taking the time to read my opinions, I greatly appreciate our chance to voice our opinions to the school have a uniform „number one‟ skirt so they are all the same style agree fully that year 13s are part of the school and should wear uniform, it does not look good and starts a fashion contest with some girls wearing unsuitable clothing for school Mufti is a good test for these young women to be responsible for what they wear Mufti allows students at that age to express themselves appropriately. It shows respect for the maturity of Year 13 and a good preparation for the workforce Skirt length needs to be looked at as they are worn too short by many As can be seen there are a wide range of opinions when it comes to our school uniform. There were a large number of comments - I have just selected examples that cover the majority of issues and suggestions made. Just to clarify: Our students can: - Wear puffer jackets. Our policy allows for a “plain black jacket” and there is no set style as we do not want to cause extra costs to whanau. - Wear any plain black shoes including canvas. Leather shoes are better for the wet weather but canvas shoes can be purchased relatively cheaply so again we are supportive of that. - Wear black trousers as long as they are dress material and style – not denim jeans. - Wear tights, or short black or white socks with their black shoes. - Wear scarfs however they must be plain black, red or white to match our school colours. If you have any questions about our school uniform please give us a call or an email.
