An Inside Look at New Baseball Coach, Big Expectations! As the major league baseball winter meetings heat up and the Yankees try to return to the World Series, the Lehman College baseball program hopes to reclaim the success that established it as one of the top Division III programs during the late 90’s. John Mehling was chosen to replace Lehman College standout Juan “Kiko” Reyes as the new men’s baseball coach. Reyes resigned in the spring to become head coach at Monroe College. Mehling, who graduated from Long Island University in 1996 with a degree in Sports Sciences, spent four seasons as the hitting and fielding instructor at Ramapo College and served ten years as a camp instructor at the New York Baseball Academy before coming to Lehman.

program.” Mehling takes over a Lightning program that has struggled over the past few seasons. The 2004 Lightning finished with a 7-14 overall record, going 4-7 in the CUNY conference and failing to make the conference tournament for the first time in the program’s history. Mehling knows that he and his staff will have a lot of work to do to rebuild the Lightning. “There is a lot of potential for success at Lehman,” said Mehling. “Coming to CUNY, I didn’t know what to expect. My initial reaction for this season was to go through a season of rebuilding a program, but after meeting the guys, and the staff here at Lehman, I think we may see results sooner than expected.” With the baseball season only four months away, John Mehling and his staff are set to make Lehman College baseball the talk of the Bronx.
