New Florida Chamber Political Poll Shows Voters Gaining Confidence Confirms Florida Heading in Right Direction TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (June 23, 2014) – New statewide polling data from the Florida Chamber of Commerce’s Political Institute shows voters are more confident with the direction Florida is heading. In the last eight months, voter outlook on Florida has increased five percent – with 43 percent of voters saying the Sunshine State is heading in the right direction compared to 41 who feel the state is headed in the wrong direction. “I’ve been saying for a long time the voters of Florida appreciate leadership and the Florida Chamber’s poll is an indicator voters believe our state is headed in the right direction again,” said Mark Wilson, President and CEO of the Florida Chamber of Commerce. “Governor Rick Scott’s favorability numbers are increasing, voters recognize more jobs and opportunities are being created for Floridians and they are feeling more confident.” The Florida Chamber Political Institute’s (FCPI) poll of 806 likely voters shows that jobs and the economy (29 percent) continue to rank as top issues, followed by education (14 percent) and healthcare (13 percent). Nearly half of the voters surveyed (46 percent) recognize that Florida’s unemployment rate has dropped since Governor Rick Scott took office and 37 percent say they are better off today than they were a year ago. The Florida Legislature received a positive job approval rating, 44 percent, compared to 38 percent that disapprove, and Governor Scott received a 52 percent job approval rating compared to 42 percent that disapprove. Favorability margins were narrow for both Governor Scott and Charlie Crist. For Governor Scott, 45 percent of those surveyed see him as favorable with 43 percent unfavorable. Crist’s favorability rating is now at 41 percent favorable to 45 percent unfavorable. In a head-to-head matchup, if the election were held today:
Rick Scott garners 41 percent, Charlie Crist receives 38 percent, Adrian Wyllie gets 4 percent, and Some other candidate earns 8 percent.
“While these numbers are encouraging for Governor Scott and Florida’s economy, it’s important to remember this is the time of the year when we would expect the opposition to try and change the subject,” said Marian Johnson, Senior Vice President of Political Strategy for the Florida Chamber of Commerce. The FCPI survey also tested the three constitutional amendments appearing on the November ballot. If the election were held today:
Amendment #1: Water and Land Conservation o 78 percent support and 14 percent oppose Amendment #2: Use of Marijuana for Certain Medical Conditions
o 58 percent support and 36 percent oppose Amendment #3: Prospective Appointment of Certain Judicial Vacancies o 34 percent support and 26 percent oppose
Finally, on the national level, a majority (52 percent) continue to oppose the Affordable Care Act. Please note: Some crosstab information is below. The samples for the polls conducted by the Florida Chamber of Commerce are consistently drawn from likely voters, meaning those voters who have the propensity and past performance of voting in elections, rather than simply including registered voters. At the beginning of the survey, voters were again screened for likelihood of voting with 100 percent stating they were extremely likely or very likely to vote. This poll was completed June 11, 2014 and was conducted by Cherry Communications during live telephone interviews. The total number of respondents was 806 with a margin of error of +/3.5%.
