2013 NEW JERSEY COLLEGIATE BASEBALL ASSOCIATION COLLEGE DIVISION I ALLSTATE TEAMS and MAJOR AWARDS ANNOUNCED Ramapo College senior outfielder Dave Jacob (Vernon, NJ) is the back-to-back New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association Division II/III Player of the Year while Kean University senior ace Kevin Herget (Park Ridge, NJ) is the 2013 NJCBA Division II/III Pitcher of the Year in voting by the organization’s 17 college division member coaches. Rowan University skipper Juan Ranero was picked as the NJCBA Coach of the Year by his peers. Additionally, junior righty closer and utility man Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, NJ) of Stevens Institute of Technology took home the states’ Division II/III Fireman of the Year. Rowan catcher Stephen Petriello (South Plainfield, NJ) was named the Rookie Player of the Year. William Paterson University right-hander Frankie Colasante (Paramus, NJ) and Felician College righty John Holland (Jackson, NJ) were tabbed co-Rookie Pitchers of the Year. Jacob becomes the first player on record to repeat as the state’s Division II/III Player of the Year. A 2013 D3baseball.com Preseason All-American, the 6-foot-2, 210-pound Vernon High School product batted a team-best .386 with 66 hits (171 at bats) while leading Ramapo to a 28-14-1 mark. In 43 games (43 starts) he had 33 runs and 27 RBIs while stealing 28 bases in 32 attempts. He added nine extra-base hits (three doubles, four triples, two homers) and amassed a .473 on-base percentage while being hit by pitch 18 times and walking 13 more. Defensively, he was stellar in right field, making just two errors in 109 chances, good for a .982 fielding percentage. Jacob had a 27-game on-base streak during the season. Herget was the unanimous Pitcher of the Year after a sensational senior campaign in which he became Kean’s all-time leader in wins (29) and strikeouts (339). A four-time First-Team All-State selection, the 5-foot-10, 185-pound right-hander helped the Cougars assume the No. 1 ranking in Division III for the first time in regular-season program history. The Park Ridge High graduate led Kean to a 34-10 ledger by going 8-2 with a 1.53 ERA and .202 opposing batting average in 13 appearances (12 starts). He threw four complete games including two shutouts and tossed a save in his lone relief stint. In 94.0 innings, Herget, the April 8 NJCBA Pitcher of the Week, struck out 89 versus 27 walks and allowed only 66 hits (50 singles) and 16 earned runs. Herget was named NJAC Pitcher of the Year. Ranero, in his 13th season as head coach of the Profs, is the NJCBA Coach of the Year for the first time after leading Rowan to a 32-12 record (12-6 NJAC) and its first New Jersey Athletic Conference championship since 2004. The Profs earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Rowan is currently ranked 22nd by D3baseball.com and 25th nationally by the ABCA and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight season and 22nd time in its history. Allen, a First-Team All-Empire 8 choice and one-time NJCBA Player of the Week, was chosen the NJCBA Fireman of the Year—given to the top relief pitcher—after notching six saves in nine relief appearances and a meager 0.73 ERA. In 12.1 innings, the 6-foot-4, 185pound Egg Harbor Township High alum allowed just one earned runs and 13 hits with 14 strikeouts and four walks. The rest of the time he was a First-Team All-State utility player who batted .343 with 40 RBIs, 32 runs and 19 steals, adding a .423 on-base and .977 fielding percentage. Stevens was 23-18 on the season. Petriello, a two-time NJAC Rookie Player of the Week and the 2013 NJAC Rookie of the Year, also takes home NJCBA Rookie Player of the Year honors after batting .360 (32-89) with 18 RBIs and 12 runs in 30 games (23 starts). He added seven doubles and a .444 onbase percentage. Defensively, he fielded at a .972 rate with only five errors in 179 chances. The 5-foot-19, 195-pound South Plainfield High graduate was a two-time NJCBA Rookie Player of the Week. Colasante, a three-time NJAC Rookie Pitcher of the Week and three-time NJCBA Rookie Pitcher of the Week was named the 2013 NJAC Fireman of the Year. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound righty helped the Pioneers to a 27-13 record. He chalked up six saves in 13 relief
appearances and owned a 2-1 record with a 1.69 ERA. In 26.2 innings he struck out 17 against 12 walks and allowed only five earned runs and 13 hits. Opponents hit just .148 against him. Holland, a two-time NJCBA Rookie Pitcher of the Week, went 3-2 with five saves and a 1.89 ERA. In 38.0 innings, the 5-foot-9, 180pound righty struck out 43 (23 walks) while allowing only eight earned runs and 19 hits. The Jackson Liberty High alum made 27 appearances (one start) and opponents hit a measly .144 against him. Rowan University was the most-honored program with 10 players and/or coaches receiving All-State First, Second or Third-Team honors, including five players on the First Team. Richard Stockton College and William Paterson were next with seven awards each and Kean had six honorees, including five First-Team selections. Ramapo had five winners while Felician, New Jersey City University, Rutgers University-Camden and Stevens had three players earn three All-State honors apiece.
