2014 NEW JERSEY COLLEGIATE BASEBALL ASSOCIATION COLLEGE DIVISION II/III ALL-STATE TEAMS and MAJOR AWARDS ANNOUNCED After capturing the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championship and making its first appearance in the NCAA Division II Regionals, Felician College claimed three of the six major New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association awards for the 2014 season. Felician sophomore first baseman Scott De Jong (North Haledon, NJ) is the 2014 NJCBA Division II/III Player of the Year while the Falcons’ junior left-hander Jack Fowler (Shrewsbury, NJ) was selected as the 2014 NJCBA Division II/III Pitcher of the Year in voting by the organization’s 17 college division member coaches. Meanwhile, Felician head coach Chris Langan (Hazlet, NJ) was picked as the NJCBA Division II/III Coach of the Year by his peers. Additionally, Montclair State University senior lefty John Silvestri (Livingston, NJ) took home the states’ Division II/III Fireman of the Year. Rutgers University-Camden designated hitter Joe Brooks (Blackwood, NJ) was named the Division II/III Rookie Player of the Year. Zeph Walters (Diamond Bar, CA) of Stevens Institute of Technology, a utility player and right-handed pitcher is the Division II/III Rookie Pitcher of the Year. De Jong, a First-Team All-Region and First-Team All-CACC selection, didn’t let his team’s use of wooden bats diminish his offensive output, finishing the year with massive numbers—including 51 RBIs and 68 hits, 26 of which went for extra bases. The 6-foot-4, 235pound Eastern Christian High School graduate was a .374 hitter (68-182), and he added a .457 on-base rate and .610 slugging percentage to a line which included 45 runs scored, 16 doubles, three triples and seven home runs. The right-handed hitter also drew 30 walks and swiped 10 bases. Defensively, he fielded .985 with just six errors in 390 total chances. He is the second Felician hitter to take home the state’s Player of the Year award since 1996 and the first since 2007. Fowler, a Second-Team All-CACC selection, saw his stock rise even further in the post-season when he collected three playoffs victories, including a shutout of Franklin Pierce in the NCAA Regionals. Fowler, a 5-foot-9, 175-pound left-handed Red Bank Regional product, finished the year with a 10-2 record and a 2.10 ERA in 18 games (12 starts), setting Falcon single-season and career records (17) for victories while establishing another single-season mark for innings pitched. A Third-Team All-State pick in 2013, he struck out 78 batters in 85.2 innings, allowing just 24 walks, 73 hits and 20 earned runs while tossing one complete game. He led the CACC in wins, innings and starts and was third in ERA and strikeouts. Fowler is the first Felician pitcher to be labeled as the state’s pitcher of the year since 2002. Langan, in his 11th season as head coach of Felician, led the Falcons to a school-record 30 victories (30-20) and the program’s ninth straight year of at least 20 wins. He was picked as the NJCBA Division II/III Coach of the Year for the first time, becoming the first Falcons skipper since 2002 to take home the accolade. He is Felician’s all-time wins leader with 261 victories and has led the program to seven CACC Tournament appearances. Silvestri, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound left-hander was chosen the Division II/III NJCBA Fireman of the Year—given to the top relief pitcher—to match the award he received from the New Jersey Athletic Conference earlier in the month. The Seton Hall Prep alum made 17 appearances for the Red Hawks, going 4-3 with four saves and a 1.95 ERA. In 32.1 innings for Montclair State, he struck out 35 versus 11 walks, had a .218 opposing batting average and allowed just seven earned runs and 27 hits. He is the first MSU player on record to receive the award from the NJCBA. Brooks, previously named the NJAC Rookie of the Year, was a unanimous selection as the state’s Division II/III Rookie Player of the Year. The Gloucester Catholic product was one of the catalysts behind a Rutgers-Camden club which won the NJAC regular season championship and advanced to the NCAA Division III regionals despite being picked seventh in the league’s preseason poll. The 5foot-10, 185-pound left-handed hitter was a 5-time NJAC Rookie of the Week and finished the year batting .421 (67-159)—just three hits shy of the Raptors’ single-season mark. In 44 games (all starts) he scored 49 times and drove in 24 runs while adding 24 walks
and 11 hit by pitch for a .523 on-base percentage. He also had eight doubles and seven steals in eight tries. Brooks is RutgersCamden’s first recipient of the NJCBA Rookie Player of the Year accolade. Walters did a little bit of everything for the Ducks and the 6-foot-3, 195-pound right-hander was most productive on the mound for Stevens, where he was the school’s second-ever Division II/III Rookie Pitcher of the Year and first since 2005. The Southern California native was 4-1 with a 1.87 ERA in nine games. In 33.2 innings, he struck out 46 batters, walked just 12 and allowed seven earned runs and 27 hits. For the fourth consecutive season, Rowan University was the most-honored program with 11 players receiving All-State First, Second or Third-Team honors, including six players on the First Team. It also had 11 players honored in 2011. Rutgers-Camden was the next most honored program with seven selections. Felician had six All-State or special awards winners with Kean University also producing six winners. Stevens had five winners while New Jersey City University and Ramapo College rounded out the top recipients with four All-State honors apiece.
