New Mexico (6-3) VS. colorado mesa (0-6)

New Mexico beach volleyball team hosts its only home matches of the season this weekend as they welcome Arizona State, Colorado Mesa and New Mexico State to Albuquerque for a two-day tournament. The Lobos (6-3) will be at Lucky 66 Bowl looking to continue their second season with rematches against Arizona State (3-4) and Colorado Mesa (0-6) and the first-ever beach matches for New Mexico State, which is trying out beach volleyball. The events start Friday with two matches and continues Saturday with five matches. Admission is $5 for everyone 12 and older, while 12 and under get in free. “It’s great to be home,” head coach Jeff Nelson said. “We have a great facility. We’re excited to get to use it for matches. … We have four matches this weekend and I think it’s a great opportunity to showcase what they’ve been doing all year.” And what they’ve been doing all year is pretty impressive, considering the Lobos have posted two times as many wins in the first two weeks as they did all of last year. It started on the first day of the season with wins against ASU and CMU out in Tempe, Ariz. Since then, the Lobos have started receiving votes in the national polls and are sitting on a three-game win streak heading into their homestand. New Mexico aims to continue the excitement this weekend, and will rely on their overall balance and some stellar pairs play to do so. Eastyn Baleto & Marisa Doran have been the most consistent pair to open 2016, winning every single match they’ve played. The tandem, playing out of the No. 4 spot in UNM’s lineup, has picked up wins against three ranked teams and own the longest pairs win streak in UNM history. But they haven’t been alone in scoring up big points for the Lobos, as Hannah Johnson & Julia Warren have teamed up for a 6-3 start this year. A virtual barometer for UNM success — Johnson & Warren’s 6-3 pairs record exactly mirrors UNM’s 6-3 record — the duo have been a steady presence in the three spot Their consistency, along with the largely steady play from No. 5 pair Maddie Mayfield & Carson

Heilborn, has been the key for New Mexico. In four of the Lobos’ victories, the 3-4-5 courts have each provided match points. The top two pairs switched up last weekend, and the new duos of Ashley Kelsey & Cassie House and Devanne Sours & Lise Rugland all had success, each picking up at least two wins.

Marisa and Eastyn open 2016 with a record-setting bang

The duo of Marisa Doran & Eastyn Baleto opened the 2016 season with nine straight wins, including victories against No. 6 Florida State, No. 10 Grand Canyon and No. 17 South Carolina. That nine-match win streak the best in program history (yes, all two years of it), surpassing the five-match run Baleto and Julia Warren last year to open the season. They have also secured the program record in wins by a single pair in a single season. Baleto and Warren went 8-6 last season.

we go as they go

So far through the first two weeks of the season, New Mexico is 6-3. Also sitting with a 6-3 record two weeks into the season is the Lobos’ No. 3 duo of Hannah Johnson & Julia Warren. There’s not much particularly exceptional about

Notes and news that on face, but Johnson & Warren are a pretty good indicator of the Lobos’ success. When Johnson & Warren win a point, the Lobos win the match. It’s a perfect 6-3 match both ways.

Maddie Mayfield, all 5-foot-4 of her, opened the season with a 4-1 record in the No. 5 position, helping the Lobos to wins over Arizona State, Cal and Colorado Mesa. It’s a 400 percent increase in wins compared to last year for the junior from Albuquerque. Also playing out the fives spot, Mayfield went just 1-9 in 2015, a win total she surpassed before the end of the first day of the season. She moved to 5-4 through two weeks, continuing her upward climb.

Well, that was quick

In its inaugural year of beach volleyball, New Mexico went 3-11, picking up its first win on the first day of the season and its last two wins on the last day of the season. This season, the Lobos went 3-2 in their opening weekend, topping Arizona State in the season opener before beating Colorado Mesa and Cal. To get a bit more perspective, look at the math below. The time between Win No. 1 and Win No. 3 last season was 41 days. The time between Win No. 1 and Win No. 3 this season was less than 48 hours.

Italics indicate a 2016 New Mexico opponent

I guess we can put the brooms away

Last season, New Mexico experienced six sweeps, losing three matches in five and claiming all three of its wins in five. This season, UNM has been a part of only one 5-0 match, sweeping Colorado Mesa on March 4.

There might not be beaches in abq, but there are in cali

New Mexico beach volleyball played exclusively in Arizona and New Mexico last season, and continued that trend to open 2016 as they played in Arizona. When the sport was called sand volleyball, those locations nevertheless fit the theme of the sport. (There’s plenty of sand in both states.) However, when the NCAA renamed the sport “beach volleyball” this past year, the joke was that New Mexico makes no sense for beach volleyball because there aren’t any proper beaches. But the Lobos finally got to play beach volleyball on a beach. When New Mexico played Irvine Valley College and MiraCosta College on March 14, they did it at the Newland Street Courts on Huntington Beach in California, which, as the

name implies, is an actual beach.

Scouting Arizona State

Arizona State will be looking to avenge a season-opening loss to the Lobos, where Hannah Johnson & Julia Warren held off the Sun Devils’ Madison Berridge & Bethany Wedepohl on the threes court for a 3-2 win. “I think Arizona State is going to come after us,” UNM head coach Jeff Nelson said. “We beat them there and it was an exciting match. I expect another exciting one here.” So far in 2016, the Sun Devils have yet to find consistency under interim head coach Jacquelyn Bunker. ASU managed to beat then-17th ranked South Carolina (which beat UNM 3-2) and swept No. 20 Loyola Marymount before falling to No. 2 USC and No. 7 Long Beach State. Last year, Arizona State took two matches from UNM, but it’s the first time the Sun Devils have come to Albuquerque in the sand.

Scouting Colorado Mesa

Colorado Mesa, a Division II school from Grand Junction, Colo., has faced a gauntlet of strong teams during its first season of beach. The Mavericks took on a tough schedule early, playing Arizona, ASU, South Carolina, Grand Canyon and UNM in the span of three days. But CMU, one of just nine DII beach programs in the NCAA, was swept in every match. They’ll get four matches this weekend, with two against New Mexico. Colorado Mesa fields a roster of 11 players under head coach David Skaff, with 10 of those players crossing over from the court team.

Scouting Colorado Mesa

New Mexico State, a strong court volleyball program, is hitting the sand for the first time ever as it experiments with the NCAA’s fastestgrowing sport. After going 28-6 and advancing to the NCAA Tournament indoors, the Aggies will be taking their first steps in beach in Albuquerque. NM State’s roster for this weekend isn’t expected to be finalized until later in the week, but if their indoor roster is any indication, there will be talent for coach Mike Jordan. Gwen Murphy earned AVCA Honorable Mention All-American on the court, while Nathalie Castellanos and Sasha-Lee Thomas were named Second Team All-WAC and Brianna Ainsworth and Tatyana Battle were named to the WAC All-Freshman team.

GOLDEN EQUIPMENT DONATES $14,625 TO LOBO VOLLEYBALL

New Mexico volleyball program and head coach Jeff Nelson are proud to announce that Golden Equipment Company has presented a donation of $14,625 to the UNM volleyball program. The donation, which is part of Golden’s “Colors

2016 New Mexico beach volleyball • 3

Notes and news for our Community” service program, is tabbed to help the continue the development of the Lobo volleyball program, including the beach volleyball team as it enters its second season next week. “We are so grateful to Golden for their support of Lobo Athletics and for this amazing contribution to our volleyball programs,” Nelson said. “Because of efforts like the one Golden has made on our behalf we can do so much more for our program and student athletes.” In Golden’s “Colors for our Community” program, Golden choses an organization, nonprofit or charity and decorates one of its pieces of equipment in the colors or logos or the benefiting organization. For 12 months, Golden’s rents out that equipment, with a portion of the proceeds going back to the beneficiary. In 2015, the Lobo Club was picked for “Colors for our Community”, with all of the proceeds generated by the UNM-themed excavator going toward Lobo Volleyball. The $14,625 raised for Lobo Volleyball is the most ever raised by one of Golden’s “Colors for our Community” campaigns.

A primer on beach volleyball

Beach volleyball and court volleyball share many of the same basic rules. Each side gets three hits, there’s rally scoring, and a team earns a points when the ball hits the ground or goes out of bounds. But there are some key difference between the two sports: • Beach volleyball is a partner sport played during the spring. Court volleyball is a sixplayer sport played during the fall. • Beach volleyball plays the best of three sets, with the first two sets played to 21 points, and a tiebreaker set played to 15 points, if necessary. A set must be won by at least two points. • Open-handed tipping is prohibited in beach volleyball and the block touch counts as one of three permitted contacts. • Coaches may only speak or give any kind of input to their players during timeouts or between sets. • Beach volleyball players switch sides of the court every seven points during a 21-point set and every five points during a 15-point set. • Beach volleyball is usually contested in dual matches, where the winning team is the school that wins three of five individual matches versus its opponent. Similar in format to tennis, each of those individual matches consist of a doubles — a pair of teammates ranked by ability — that are matched against their corresponding doubles from the opposing team.

Convention, allowing the sport to advance from the emerging sports for women list to a fullfledged NCAA championship in spring 2016. The NCAA Beach Volleyball Committee also determined the sport will be officially referred to as “beach volleyball”. When the sport was placed on the list of emerging sports for women in 2009, it was called sand volleyball. But because the sport is known as beach volleyball at all other levels of play throughout the world, the committee made its decision to refer to the sport as beach volleyball. The inaugural NCAA Beach Volleyball Championships will take place May 6-8, 2016 at the Gulf Shores Public Beach in Gulf Shore, Ala. The championship will have an eightteam bracket that will be played in a doubleelimination format. Beach volleyball is the fastest-growing NCAA sport with 48 colleges and universities sponsoring it as of January 2016. NCAA rules require 40 sponsoring schools to request an NCAA championship.
