New Mexico beach volleyball kicks off its second season of competition this weekend with bigger goals and a talented roster as it looks to translate its experience from 2015 into more success in 2016. The Lobos, who open Friday with four matches at the Sun Devil Challenge before a standalone match vs. California on Sunday, return all but one player from last year’s inaugural squad while also adding some key players for season No. 2. This first week of competition, which features matches against No. 6 Florida State, No. 17 South Carolina, Arizona State and California, is a big first challenge for the Lobos, who went 3-11 last season. Looking to lead the charge this season is a strong group of players vying for the top four slots in UNM’s lineup. Lise Rugland, is one of the leaders, and will be tasked with playing in one of the top two positions for the Lobos. She’ll team up with Cassie House who is making her beach debut after sitting out last season due to injury. Devanne Sours and Ashley Kelsey, who played together to start last season, will pair up to open 2016. They will compete with Rugland and House for top position. Eastyn Baleto and Julia Warren, New Mexico’s winningest tandem from 2015, also return, but will be paired with other players. Warren will team up with the Lobos’ lone senior, Hannah Johnson, while Baleto will join with Marisa Doran Those two pairs will fill out the Lobos’ top four spots in the five-slot lineup, with Carson Heilborn and Maddie Mayfield slated take the final spot. Heilborn, a backup setter indoors, has shown great aptitude in the sand, while Mayfield posted solid results last season despite rotating through number of partners. However, the Lobos still have a number of players that can challenge for playing time, including Chloe Crappell (who saw action at the No. 1 spot last year), Allie Askew, Jackie Baro, Sami Reynold, Keaton Alley and Mercedes Pacheco.

The donation, which is part of Golden’s “Colors for our Community” service program, is tabbed to help the continue the development of the Lobo volleyball program, including the beach volleyball team as it enters its second season next week. “We are so grateful to Golden for their support of Lobo Athletics and for this amazing contribution to our volleyball programs,” Nelson said. “Because of efforts like the one Golden has made on our behalf we can do so much more for our program and student athletes.” In Golden’s “Colors for our Community” program, Golden choses an organization, nonprofit or charity and decorates one of its pieces of equipment in the colors or logos or the benefiting organization. For 12 months, Golden’s rents out that equipment, with a portion of the proceeds going back to the beneficiary. In 2015, the Lobo Club was picked for “Colors

Scouting Arizona State

Beach volleyball and court volleyball share many of the same basic rules. Each side gets three hits, there’s rally scoring, and a team earns a points when the ball hits the ground or goes out of bounds. But there are some key difference between the two sports: • Beach volleyball is a partner sport played during the spring. Court volleyball is a sixplayer sport played during the fall. • Beach volleyball plays the best of three sets, with the first two sets played to 21 points, and a tiebreaker set played to 15 points, if necessary. A set must be won by at least two points. • Open-handed tipping is prohibited in beach volleyball and the block touch counts as one of three permitted contacts. • Coaches may only speak or give any kind of input to their players during timeouts or between sets. • Beach volleyball players switch sides of the court every seven points during a 21-point set and every five points during a 15-point set. • Beach volleyball is usually contested in dual matches, where the winning team is the school that wins three of five individual matches versus its opponent. Similar in format to tennis, each of those individual matches consist of a doubles — a pair of teammates ranked by ability — that are matched against their corresponding doubles from the opposing team.

Colorado Mesa, a Division II school from Grand Junction, Colo., enters its first season of beach volleyball. One of just nine DII beach programs in the NCAA, CMU fields a roster of 11 players under head coach David Skaff, with 10 of those players crossing over from the court team. The Mavericks court volleyball team has experienced success, going 19-12 and reaching the NCAA regionals in 2015.

and is unofficially sitting at 21st in the 20-team DiG poll. The Bears are not part of the Sun Devil Challenge, and will face New Mexico in a standalone match at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.

Arizona State, now starting its third season of beach, returns just two players from its top three pairs in 2015. Juniors Bianca Arellano and Whitney Follette helped the Sun Devils to a 7-12 record last season, which includes two victories over the Lobos. Along a number of new faces in its lineup — eight of the Sun Devils’ 13 players are underclassmen — ASU also has a new head coach, as former assistant Jacquelyn Bunker takes over the helm.

South Carolina beach volleyball, coming off a 14-7 record in 2015, enters its third year ranked No. 17 in the DiG Magazine’s 2016 Beach Volleyball Preseason Poll. A member of the new Coastal Collegiate Sports Association, South Carolina is one of six CCSA schools to be ranked. Under third-year head coach Moritz Moritz, the Gamecocks returns 11 players from 2015, including seniors Sarah Blomgren, Litsa Darby and Zuzanna Reszka, but will have to replaces their top two duos.

Scouting Florida State

Florida State heads into its fifth season of beach volleyball as the nation’s sixth-ranked team, second-best in the CCSA. The Seminoles were just one of eight teams to make the 2015 AVCA Championships (the predecessor to the NCAA Championships), finishing seventh. FSU returns 15 players from last year’s squad, including its top two teams by wins, Victoria Paranagua/Kristina Pellitteri and Vanessa Freire/Annie Montgomery. The Seminoles have a new coaching staff, too, with Brooke Niles taking over in Tallahassee.

Scouting California

Cal opens its third season with a deep roster that features returnees Sarah Cole and Bryce Bark joining an accomplished freshmen class that includes two AVCA High School AllAmericans. New head coach Meagan Schmitt takes over after the Golden Bears finishes 2015 with a 7-14 record. However, Cal is receiving votes to open 2016,

NCAA approves beach Volleyball as 90th Championship

The NCAA approved beach volleyball as the 90th NCAA Championship at the 2015 NCAA Convention, allowing the sport to advance from the emerging sports for women list to a fullfledged NCAA championship in spring 2016. The NCAA Beach Volleyball Committee also determined the sport will be officially referred to as “beach volleyball”. When the sport was placed on the list of emerging sports for women in 2009, it was called sand volleyball. But because the sport is known as beach volleyball at all other levels of play throughout the world, the committee made its decision to refer to the sport as beach volleyball. The inaugural NCAA Beach Volleyball Championships will take place May 6-8, 2016 at the Gulf Shores Public Beach in Gulf Shore, Ala. The championship will have an eightteam bracket that will be played in a doubleelimination format. Beach volleyball is the fastest-growing NCAA sport with 48 colleges and universities sponsoring it as of January 2016. NCAA rules require 40 sponsoring schools to request an NCAA championship.
