About the Panthers • Founded in 1968 – one of the oldest youth clubs in the area • Member of Ventura County Youth Track Conference (VCYTC)

• Also Ventura, Camarillo, Heritage Valley, Ojai, Thousand Oaks, Moorpark, Oxnard • NPTC operates under VCYTC, a 501(c)3 non-profit

• 250 to 270 youth participants

• 8 teams, ranging from ages 7 to 16

• Goals

• Have fun, learn new skills, get fit, compete, improve, friendships

• Program Costs – Registration fees and fundraisers pay for facilities, league fees, insurance, photos, awards, t-shirts, equipment, meet officials, etc. • Matching programs – Amgen, Shire, others

Important Items • Registration Fees - $90 due tonight • Uniforms - $50 (top and bottom)

• If child is new to the club, please purchase tonight or online by this Sunday! • Two styles; loose fit and “compression” fit • If you are returning, does last year’s uniform still fit?

• Volunteer Deposits - $150 per family due tonight

• Sign up for 3 (or more) volunteer slots online at nptrackclub.org • We need your time, not your deposit

• Apparel – Available here tonight and at some practices. • Birth Certificates – required for all new athletes • Openings: Girls 9-10 (10 spots), Girls 11-12 (3 spots), Girls 13-16 (5 spots), Boys 78 (1 spot), Boys 11-12 (1 spot) • Drops can be done by first week of practice 7

Practices - Logistics • Youth/Intermediate and Distance groups next Monday at Peppertree • All teams at NPHS Panther Stadium starting week of February 12th • Team practice schedules vary by team • Communications will come from team coaches • General days/time frames M/T/Thu 4:30-6PM

• Drop Offs and Pick Ups • Lesser Drive gate – be respectful of neighbors • Important: DO NOT let kids cross from other side of Lesser alone

• Plenty of parking on street and NPHS parking lot • Make sure coach is there at drop off and please be on time for pick up 9

Practices - What to Bring • Gear bag with name/phone # • Running shorts and shirt • Running shoes • Water bottle • Sweats or jacket – colder days • Sunscreen – warmer/overcast days Light rain? Yes, we practice. Thunder and lightning? Nope. 10

Training Shoes, Racing Shoes • General purpose training shoes • Doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive • Local retailers, sporting goods (Big 5, Dick’s), Camarillo Outlets and running specialty stores (Roadrunner Sports, Future Track)

• Experienced runners may opt for lightweight training shoes • Meets – Spikes are optional for Bantam and older • 3/16” “needle” (not pyramid) spikes for all weather tracks

Track Etiquette • Only coaches, assistant coaches and athletes on the field • Parents can watch from sidelines • Practices and meets

• No food or drink on the infield – only water • No Gatorade, no gum, no candy, etc.

• Keep it clean

Meet Overview • Run from 8:30AM to 1PM give or take • Compete with same age groups from other teams • Athletes staged from fast to fastest to ensure fair competition • Encourage kids to try as many events as they can • Coaches will cover much more over the coming weeks • 2018 Season • • • •

Event Limits: No more than 4 in total + bonus event No more then 3 running events out of the 4 4x400 relay is “bonus” event

• 1600m • 3200m (midgets/youth/inter. only) • Hurdles (midgets/youth/inter. only) VCTYC has strict rules on “over-eventing.” Times will be disqualified.

Post-Season Meets • Ranking Based System

• Top 9 performers in “laned” events (100, 200, 400) and field events • Top 12 performers in non-laned events: 800, 1600, 3200 • Relays: One team from each club

• Conference Finals and Conference Championships

• Two meets; but treated as one from an eventing standpoint

• Co-Conference Championships

• Top performers from VCYTC and SCYTFC

Specialty Coaches • Distance: Kris Karsten

• Open to all age groups • Should my athlete train with the distance runners?  Let them decide what makes them happy

• Age group coaches, not distance coaches, are main communication channels • Serves to increase opportunities, not restrict them:  Distance runners can do sprinting events at meets  Age group athletes (sprinters) can still run distance events at meets
