The Episcopal Parish of the Church of The Mediator and

the Church of Our Redeemer JUNE 2014 Communion Kit Just a note to say thanks again to Sally Johnson for getting the communion kit for Fr. Chris Robinson. Fr. Charlie Deaton blessed this kit for Fr. Chris this past weekend at the picnic in McComb and it was left at the church office. It was packaged up and Ronnie DeHabermann was kind enough to take it to the post office on Monday, May 19th. So Fr. Chris should be receiving it sometime this week. Also at the picnic Fr. Charlie Deaton blessed a communion kit for Magnolia and one for McComb.

Doris Ciuffi Before moving to Magnolia, Doris Ciuffi* didn’t know much about the little town. She liked the name “Magnolia, Mississippi,” which seems to drip with southern charm. Now that she lives there, she has found that it lives up to its name. She attends the Redeemer in Magnolia. She and her brother, Bill Moore, fell in love with the old church building while driving around in Magnolia. They decided to investigate further and soon decided to make the Redeemer their church home. They have since been confirmed and attend regularly. She and her husband Michael moved from Kenner about 3 years ago to enjoy a quieter life and to be near her brother. Soon after moving to the Magnolia area, her husband was diagnosed with cancer. He has received treatment and is recovering well. Doris is retired from UPS. She said, “My days with UPS were awesome. I worked in the Harahan office and made so many great friends over the years and we keep in touch even after our retirement. UPS is a wonderful company to work for and I have many, many good memories. Although Doris lived in Kenner most of her life and has wonderful friends that she misses, she seems enchanted by the town of Magnolia, the people, and the church there. Doris is the mother of two daughters. One daughter, Dawn, lives in New Orleans. While her other daughter, Wendy, lives in Connecticut. Doris has two granddaughters, Molly and Libby, who live in Connecticut with their mother Wendy. “I love gardening and doing things outdoors, I try and plant things that are colorful for the summer and like lots of sun because my beds are full sun.” “My husband was very sick for the first year and half after we moved here. He has come a long way health-wise, he is a real trooper. He has been through so much and still today, does all sort of handy things around the house. He was a plumber and sprinkler fitter for forty years. So he has all types of skills, he can do just about anything from building our garage by himself to all the plumbing and electrical in our home. His recovery has left him a much thinner man, but he has continued to live his life with joy. We are very blessed.” Mike and Doris have a little dachshund named Sassy, and she is just so precious, “Mike and I love her so very much, she was eight months old when we got her, she is now eleven. She lives up to her name, she has long, pretty auburn colored hair with big brown eyes that look like she has on eye liner.”

“When Katrina came and we boarded all the windows and left a couple days before she hit New Orleans. It was a sad time for lots of people, so many of my friends had water damage and destroyed roofs - they had to start all over again. Mike and I were very blessed our home was not touched. It was a very scary experience. When we left we didn't know if we would come back to our home or not. God is good!” *(The Ciuffi name - pronounced sue-fee- is Italian, Mike’s parents were from Rome.)

Financial News Dear Church Family, April set us back just a bit. We brought in through pledges and plate offerings, $10,929.81 and expenses totaled $13,647.69, which left us with a deficit of $2,717.88. Some of our bigger expenses for the month included our mission pledge of $1,250.00, church utilities of $994.40 and capital improvements of $1,040.00. Next month we will have property liability insurance, which can set us back some too. Over all our total income is down a little which I hope will improve in the upcoming months. Our income also goes down some during the summer months too. Now, don’t let this report get you down and give up! As I have stated before, our financial report is like riding a roller coaster. At year-end, we always seem to roll right on in to our final destination. I hope everyone has great plans for the summer, which includes your church family too! God is good! Cindy FROM THE SENIOR WARDEN

Canon David Johnson addressed the Vestry on May 14, 2014 about the options available to our parish for calling a rector. He gave us information on three options. The first option is to use the full search process to call a rector. This option usually takes from fourteen to sixteen months. The second option is the Priest-in-Charge process. This option is an abbreviated process usually lasting from three to six months. The Bishop guides the process and submits to the vestry names to consider. The Vestry functions as the search committee. We are free to connect with those on the list, visit those interested, etc. If a priest from this list is selected, the letter of agreement is for a two year period. During these two years, the priest selected is learning about us, and we are learning about the priest. During these two years, the Priest-in Charge functions with the full authority of a rector. At the end of the two year period, we are free to call that person as our rector or not, and the priest is free to accept the call or not. The third option is to consider seminarians. There are five who will be graduating in May 2015. Although a vote was not taken, the mood of the vestry seemed to be in the direction of the Priest-in-Charge. The first step in the Priest-in-Charge process is for the congregation to complete a questionnaire. We were given a sample or template of a questionnaire for us to edit to reflect local circumstances of our local congregation. We are also to develop a profile or narrative description of our parish once the results of the questionnaire are given to the Vestry. We were given two samples from other churches. We had good attendance for the annual parish picnic. I want to thank the Vestry and all those who helped to make this event a successful one. If you want to volunteer to have the picnic at your home next year in May except the second Sunday (Mother’s Day), let me know.

For the newcomer ministry, Doris Ciuffi will acknowledge area visitors who sign the guest register in Magnolia with a card. Kathy Assaf is working hard to line up refreshments for McComb after the Sunday service. This is so important to have that time to meet newcomers. Mary Ellen Chamberlin’s last day to serve as our organist in McComb was May 25, 2014. We will honor her on the fifth Sunday in June. After sixteen year of service to our church, she will experience full retirement. Thank you for a job well done. Jessica Troutman is organizing Vacation Bible School at the parish hall in McComb on June 13th-14th. She needs volunteers to assist her. We have priests for every Sunday in June. JR. WARDEN REPORT

On the construction front, we are moving forward. Noel reported to the Vestry that the Parish Hall committee has agreed on a plan. Vestry told her to go ahead and get an architect to draw those plans up and give us a projected cost. Hopefully now we can soon report plans for beginning construction on that project. I am, once again, trying to secure a contractor to move forward on gables for the Church and Parish Hall. I know this is beginning to sound like a broken record. Seems as if we agree on plan and cost but when it's time to work the contractors have disappeared. We met with one contractor last week and have another coming to look at the project so we can get new bids to present to the vestry. Brought to the Vestry a list of work that needs doing a the Rectory on North street. Hopefully we can get one contractor to complete both projects. Would like to have everything done by the time we have a new Priest if at all possible. A large "thank you" goes out to all who helped setting up for, and clearing up after our 5th Sunday luncheon and Parish picnic. As many have observed my leg is still giving me problems. I was unable to help but was there in spirit. I continue to tell other churches and vestries of our members jumping in and helping. I am so blessed with all of you helping me in the many projects going on. Again, Thank you!!!!

In Christ, Peace Ronnie DeHabermann
