NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Butler County marches for climate change action Marcellus Outreach Butler and Slippery Rock environmental club work to support a more sustainable future for Western Pennsylvania SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (Apr. 10, 2017) – The Slippery Rock Earth Defenders and Marcellus Outreach Butler are sponsoring a march and rally for climate change action in downtown Butler on April 29. The event is a sister march to the larger “People’s Climate March” taking place in Washington D.C. on the same day. “We are marching for air, water, land, families, communities, jobs, and justice,” Sam Hoszwa, president and founder of the environmental awareness club, the Earth Defenders, said. “This march is about the future; everyone’s future. We are trying to build a sustainable, habitable, [and] peaceful world for everyone.” Like the larger parent event, the Butler march and rally will bring attention to climaterelated issues facing the communities of Butler County and Western Pennsylvania and demand local representatives do more to tackle climate change and other environmental issues. “Our politicians have failed us [by] either actively denying the existence of climate change or saying it does exist but acting like it doesn’t,” Sam Hoszwa said. Roughly 97 percent of climate scientists say climate change is human-driven with 14 of the hottest years on record occurring in the last 16 years. One of the many goals of the Earth Defenders
NEWS RELEASE is bringing awareness to the impact of climate change while also demonstrating what someone can do to help reduce or halt the effects right at home. “We are seeing drastic changes in many key indicators of climate such as temperature, sea ice coverage, and rainfall patterns, but we are also seeing major changes in other factors that concern me such as biodiversity, migration patterns, and sea level rise,” Dr. Julie Snow, a Slippery Rock University professor and atmospheric chemist, said. “While most people think [climate change] doesn’t impact them, I will tell you it does. It will impact where and how we get fresh water, where and how we grow our food, and the cost of food. Changes in climate are going to creep into every aspect of our lives.” The march is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. in Butler’s Diamond Park. A rally will follow immediately afterwards with planned speeches by Sam Hoszwa and Dr. Julie Snow. “I hope that our march will continue to raise awareness about climate change and encourage people to become educated, get involved, and start making positive change that will help reduce the impacts of climate change on themselves and their future children or grandchildren,” Dr. Julie Snow said. “We, the ‘ordinary’ people, need to seize our own future and build the world we want to live in,” Sam Hoszwa said. “[It’s] up to us to change the world.” Everyone who is able is encouraged to participate in the event, and children are also welcome. The Earth Defenders are offering a car pool for any Slippery Rock University students interested in participating. A sign-up sheet is available outside ATS 319. ###

[email protected] About the Earth Defenders We are a group of students and citizens in the Slippery Rock area concerned about the current state of our planet. We are working to educate the student body of Slippery Rock University about climate change, fracking, deforestation, strip mining, and sustainability. We work with other organizations in the community to hold rallies, marches, and programs. We will also pressure SRU to divest from any environmentally-harmful companies it may be invested in. We also want to see the Slippery Rock community, including the SRU campus, powered entirely by renewable energy, serviced by reliable public transportation, be a sanctuary for wild animals and plants, and produce as little waste as possible.
