NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Kimberly High School’s Rube Goldberg Teams Bring Home Awards for Their Machines That Can “Open an Umbrella” Kimberly, Wis. – April 22, 2016 – The Mechanical Design/Rube Goldberg class at Kimberly High School had two teams participate in the regional competition this March at the Waukesha County Technical College. This year students were asked to solve the task of "Open an Umbrella." Students started this challenge back on the 1st day of school in September. They had to learn to work as an engineering team and go through the design process of brainstorming, sketching, CAD modeling, building/fabricating, and presenting their outrageously complicated solutions for a simple task. “The students continue to amaze me with their ideas and quality of work on these crazy machines,” said Kevin Janota, technology education teacher and Rube Goldberg Machine Team advisor. “These two machines are at the top of the best we've ever built at Kimberly High School.” The team for Machine A choose the theme Toy Story – Andy’s Room. In just over a minute and a half, it can “Open an Umbrella” in 89 steps. This team brought home 2nd place at the regional competition and also earned the Best Project Team and the Peer Award.

With a Cat in the Hat theme, it only takes Machine B 80 seconds to “Open an Umbrella” in 72 steps. The team for Machine B brought home 4th place at the competition. As a school, KHS had a successful event with the two teams finishing in 2nd place and 4th place out of 18 schools at the event. It was their best two team finish ever. “I'm very proud of their work as a whole and extremely proud of those students that stepped up as leaders to get their machines done on time,” said Janota. “Unfortunately, our journey ended at regionals this year as only the 1st place team moves on to nationals.” To view a news clip about the experience featuring Alek Johnson, a junior on the Machine B team, visit http://goo.gl/I4nFIO.
