Year 2: SATS take place throughout the month of May up until half term. We ask you to bring your children to school every day to ensure that they do not miss out on their turn. We will always call you if we think that your child is not well enough to be in school. As the weather becomes warmer please provide your child with named sunhats as they enjoy the outside area and activities during the lunchtime period. We also would like to remind you to label their school jumpers. Thank you.

Book Club: Last month we read The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne. Summary – When Bruno returns home from school one day, he discovers that his belongings are being packed in crates. His father has received a promotion and the family must move from their home to a new house far away, where there is nothing to do and no one to play with. A tall fence running alongside stretches as far as the eye can see and cuts him off from the strange people he can see in the distance. Group discussion - Everyone in the group enjoyed the book and felt that they would recommend it to friends and family. Carol also felt that it would be appropriate to read with her son in the junior school. We discussed how it felt to be the youngest in the family and how the character was possibly protected from the experiences going on around him. Although he is nine years old he is portrayed as younger than this through his innocence, his misunderstanding of the environment they are living in and the language he uses. However, his sister is twelve but appears to grow up throughout the story. It was interesting to read how their father dealt with his role as a Commandant in Hitler’s army. The discussion led us to compare how prejudice, religion and culture has changed or perhaps not changed in the present day, particularly in light of recent events in Paris, Brussels and Syria. The book was also made in to a film in 2008 and is considered a good representation of the book. If you would like to join us in reading the next book we have chosen The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. We are meeting on Friday 1st July at 2.00 before Parents and Carers’ Meeting.

If you would rather not attend the group you can email your thoughts and/or a book recommendation to Jeanette at [email protected].

Carterhatch Preschool: You may have seen in the local press that our preschool in Bell Lane is facing a possible closure. The decision to close the preschool has not been taken lightly but we felt that due to financial reasons it was no longer viable to continue with the provision. Parents and staff have been informed and for those parents who are not moving on to a school we are helping with applications. If you have been affected by the news please do not hesitate to contact either of our headteachers, Adrienne or Sarah. Jeanette our Family Support Worker is also available to assist with applying for alternative provision. The school nursery in Autumn Close has not been affected by the possible closure. If your child is unable to attend school please call the school office on 0208 804 6886 or text 07572 135463
