St. Raphael’s Catholic Primary School Newsletter Week 8 Autumn 1: 4th November 2016 As we walk with Jesus we love, live and learn. Read Write Inc Parents’ Curriculum Evening It was great to see so many people turn up for the curriculum evening last night. Mrs Quinlivan’s presentation is on the school website for anybody who couldn’t come. Lots of you have been so helpful buying resources to help your child learn at home and buying the novels that children are studying in school, we really appreciate this support, thank you. Hounslow library service area coming in to help weed out old books from our library this month as some books have outdated information. When this is done we will need to purchase up to date books to please make sure you support our PSA events.

Life Bus You may have seen the Life Bus in school for two weeks offering a range of lessons to classes. I was fortunate to sit in year 5’s lesson this week when they were looking at the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol on our bodies. I was impressed by the child friendly approach to such a serious topic and how mature our children were in their responses. Lessons vary and are centred on real life issues such as keeping children safe, anger management, peer relations and many other issues. The children are really enjoying these lessons which take place in a memorable environment.

Remembrance Assembly 5 Benjamin told us all about Remembrance Sunday this week. They explained why we wear poppies and showed clips of Flanders Fields as well as reciting the famous poem In Flanders Fields. Thank you to the parents who turned up to watch the assembly.

Parking

A picture tells a thousand stories. Parking on zigzags outside school, parking in the middle of the road, reversing out of the cul-de-sac. All of this indicated that we don’t care about children’s safety which I am sure is not the case. We need to change behaviours.

E-Safety Visit the Share Aware section of the NSPCC website for advice and guidelines on how to help your child stay safe on social networks, apps and games: https://www.nspcc.org.uk/preventing-abuse/keeping-children-safe/share-aware/

Poppy Appeal Support the Royal British Legion by buying poppies, wristbands or bracelets at St. Raphael’s School. The Year 6 children will be selling them in the playground at lunchtime next week. All profits from the poppy appeal go to help the work of The Royal British Legion in its role of caring and campaigning for our Armed Forces and their families. Thank you for your support. On Friday 11th November, we will celebrate Remembrance Day and we will mark this in school with liturgies for the children. Wristbands and bracelets: £1 each Poppies: 50p (additional donations are always welcome)

Action Aid

On Friday 11th November we are having a Pyjama Day in school to raise money for the children we support through Action Aid. Your child may wear their pyjamas, dressing gown, slippers to school on that day and must bring £1 to support Action Aid. Please ensure they bring outdoor shoes suitable for playtime and lunchtime. Thank you for your support.

1 Esau Liturgy 1 Esau prepared a liturgy about Remembrance Day celebrated it with parents on Thursday morning. They spoke about why we celebrate Remembrance day and dressed the prayer table with a big poppy, their class bible and a candle. They related this to stories from the Bible. They spoke out so clearly and promoted our British values in school. Well done Miss Venti and Miss Leonard.

Remembrance Day Children will be celebrating Remembrance Day next week by attending Gospel Assembly and discussing it in class. Poppies are being sold in school
