Serving the Lyme Community for over 100 years
Conferences = Communication = Understanding = Progress

This is a very busy week for all of us, parents jumping from Imagination and Knowledge conference to conference, arranging play dates, kids making after school plans and adjusting to a new routine, and teachers gathering information, reviewing work and meeting with one family after the other. As busy as it is, and as much of a disruption to our routines, it is likely one of the most important times of the year. The opportunity to stop and reflect on our students and our children. Conferences provide us the ability to communicate directly with opportunities to ask questions, provide clarification and convey information which could never be encapsulated by a number on a piece of paper. We can share what they are succeeding at and what they struggle with, over all the dimensions of their being — physical, social, emotional, and, yes, intellectual or academic. Through these conversations we can get a better Kindergarten has always sense of what we (home/school) can do to support them in their progress. been the source of It is an important time - even if the conversation is difficult - because it philosophical inspiration, means we are communicating and gaining a better understanding not only this week the K-Kids of the child we are focussed on, but, each other as well. Look Who Stopped By
I had planned just to give a shout out to Mikaela Shiffrin, for no other reason than she is the proud owner of a reindeer ( oh, and a world cup win in Finland). Then, much to my surprise, she and her mom, Eileen (a superstar Mom in her own right) popped in to visit after flying back from Helsinki. What a nice surprise! It was great to catch up, and reminisce about things— her old house, the routes they used to run, afternoons in the library and more recently her unabiding love of Barilla Pasta (please note sponsor placement). It was great to hear how much these memories meant to her. I must say that while Mikaela may be best known for her skill as a skier, I think anyone who spends time with her or her brother, Taylor, would remember them from that point on for what poised, humble and kind people they are. And while the world celebrates her for her accomplishments in a ski race, her teachers, classmates and I will remember her for what she contributes to the human race— kindness, humility, intellect, compassion for others, a level of grace and poise that left an indelible impression on those that knew her. It was really great to see Mikaela, not for the obvious reason that she owns a reindeer (how cool is that), but the reminder that she, like many around us, will make the difference in the world by simply being good people. I am thankful to have been given such a clear and tangible example of this fact in such an unexpected way and be reminded that, while some things change, others persist. Kindness, gratitude, and concern for others wins (a reindeer may not be part of this win, but humanity certainly is). Keep it up Mikaela (on the ski slope too)!!
