For the last couple months the students of Mrs. Burns’s 5th grade science class have been hard at work on a mission of discovery, imagination and understanding of how species adapt to survive in their environment. They received the following letter from the head scientist at the World Wildlife Fund (a.k.a. Mrs. Burns) asking for their help exploring the globe to discover a new species of animal. ! !

discover new species

Spot Imagination and Knowledge Perfect Examples of Imagination and Knowledge

Dear 5th Grade Biologist, You are about to embark on an exciting journey of discovery that will take you to explore new places and animals around the globe.  You will be sent with a team of other scientists to explore a chosen habitat.  Your mission is to learn as much as you can about this place so that you can then be informed when sent out to discover a never before seen animal.  We at W.W.F. know there are so many creatures yet to be discovered and we want to be at the forefront of these new discoveries.  With your help we are sure that we will be able to present some amazing new animals to rest of world. ! After your return from this mission we will expect a full report and presentation on the animals you discover.  It is very important to us that your new animal fit into its habitat as seamlessly as possible.  We want to ensure the survival of the species and the only way it will survive is if its adaptations allow it to thrive in its environment.  Keep this in mind on your mission.! !

Since receiving this letter, the students have been working enthusiastically to research their habitat, understanding the challenges it poses to survival and create a species that has special structural and behavioral adaptations well suited to their assigned environment. They are honing their research and writing skills, life science knowledge, observational skills, creativity, time management skills, and much more, while collaborating with a group of fellow 5th grade scientists. Very soon they will be ready to unveil their amazing discoveries to the Lyme community. In the next couple weeks stop in to see their handcrafted models, posters, and descriptive paragraphs. Other guest scientists, will be reviewing the species to evaluate the effectiveness of the adaptation and its feasibility. Feasibility is based upon whether they can provide an example of such a species in their assigned habitat and whether # 9 that combined adaptations would work together effectively. Students will be presenting and • Volume: 9 • defending their species’ adaptations to a panel from the Department of Cryptogenetics’ Genetic 2014-2015 SCHOOL YEAR Evaluation Review Board.

From  the  Guidance  Office  :

Dear  Parents,   One  of  our  educational  assistants,  Sara  McBride,  recently  shared  an   article  with  me  about  apologizing.    The  implications  of  how  and  why  to   say  “sorry”  in  a  genuine  voice,  with  a  thoughtful  script,  are  so  com-‐ pelling,  I  would  like  to  share    some  of  these  ideas  with  you.

!

Everyone  has  probably  heard  or  seen  (or  said!)  “sorrrrrry”  in  an  “okay,  if   I  have  to”  tone  of  voice,  with  arms  crossed  and  a  snarly  face.    This  type   of  apology  does  nothing  for  the  offended,  and  actually,  the  offender   has  not  gained  anything  either.    Saying  sorry  with  sincerity  takes   courage,  one  of  our  school  values,    and  it  allows  for  an  opportunity  to   restore  damaged  relationships.    It  gives  one  the  strength  to  admit   mistakes  and  to  realize  that  we  are  more  than  our  mistakes.    It  also   helps  to    promote  empathy.

! !

The  article  that  Sara  shared  with  me  suggests    four  steps  for  a  mean-‐ ingful  apology.    These  steps  are:                  1.                              I’m  sorry  for  .....    (be  specific)                  2.                            This  is  wrong  because  ......    (be  specific)                  3.                              In  the  future  I  will  .........      (be  specific)                  4.                            Will  you  forgive  me  .....

! !

I  will  be  sharing  this  script  with  my  K-‐5    guidance  classes.    I  think  this  is   an  important  tool  we  can  give  our  children  and  ourselves.   Happy  New  Year!   Helen  Skelly,  School  Counselor
