The importance of Balance.

JUNE

What a wonderful short week it’s been in Mt Isa this week. After the long weekend we just had, our kids have been smiling like crazy as they play on the playground at school, scrambling over the monkey bars and enjoying soccer. As I watched some of the grade 3s and 4s scrambling the other morning over the playground equipment, jumping from the bridge to another apparatus into piles - it was fun. A girl laughed as her friend shouted, “come on, get up, keep moving”, whilst another girl kept laughing as they fell down. Our kids were smiling like crazy.

In all of this fun, there were no experiments, no 21st century collaboration focus or concepts the students needed to think about. No assessment tools were being measured, but as they scrambled over the playground apparatus and found their way out to reach a high point, there was real learning. It reminded me of the pace we lead in education right now, as we strive for perfection to deliver amazing 21st century programs every day for our students whilst bringing our ‘ A game’. So often we can get caught up in the one-dimensional nature that education can become as the committed teachers we are: always working for a better program, outcome or attending the latest professional endeavours which are endless. It’s important to stop work occasionally and reset by taking time out and find balance for ourselves. As parents, this also rings a similar tune, as we are in gear being the best parent we can for our kids every day. After watching our own kids on the playground and scrambling, it was obvious they felt better afterwards. Finding balance leads to happiness, it feeds self-worth, is uplifting and the benefit is we can feed that energy to those around us. Rather than feeling the negative, and perpetually fuelling it, we sometimes need to find balance and refocus. The long weekend was a great opportunity for this. By taking time out, and finding balance, engaging in deep rich conversations, not about work or school, we are more reflective, gain focus and deeper meaning. This week we appointed our new Assistant Principal of Religious Education/ Curriculum for 2015 - Johnathon Greer. We are excited about Johnathan taking up the appointment and continuing in his shared Year 3 teaching role for 2015. This is a great outcome for our school and our kids, which are at the centre of our thinking at St Kieran’s. Finally, tomorrow (Thursday) is our annual athletics carnival. Mr McLauchlan sent out a program last week - we start at 8:30am and should conclude by early afternoon. Please come and support, it’s going to be wonderful. Warm regards Matt Matt Tyrie

Mount Isa Show schedule – make an entry and support your show! Plus, don’t forget to call in to see the St Kieran’s display at the show.

It is with great pleasure that I take on the role of Assistant Principal – Religious Education at St Kieran’s Catholic School for 2015. Certainly, the decision to apply was one that came after much soul searching. Having worked in many of our Catholic schools, I have always been drawn to the role of APRE and felt a real passion for Religious Education. This is where I have found the greatest enjoyment in my career – from the simple things, such as prayer celebrations with students, to things on a slightly larger scale, such as mission trips to the Philippines. To be the APRE of our school is a true honour and pleasure. To say Chrissy Sonego left a lasting impression on our school would be quite the understatement. You need only spend a moment with any student to know that she was universally loved and cherished at St Kieran’s. It is with sadness that we see her move on, but I am certainly grateful for the hard work and love she has placed into ‘paving the way’ and laying the foundations for the next step in our school history. I am thrilled to also maintain my role as Year 3 teacher at St Kieran’s for 2015. As mentioned in my first newsletter entry, the energy, enthusiasm and acceptance I have received from our Year 3 students is inspirational. I was so proud of them last Friday as they pulled together for assembly prayer and led our school in celebrating special people from our Catholic tradition. Despite one quarter of the class going down to illness and several ‘redrafts’ of the script, they made it work outstandingly! No doubt, the students in Year 3 will continue to be a great source of support and continued inspiration for me as we move forward. I am excited and gracious to be working with Matt Tyrie, our Principal, who brings a wealth of international knowledge to our community. I am equally looking forward to working in a new role with our incredible staff, who remain some of the most dedicated and passionate educators I have met. As we near the end of Term 2, I have much to be thankful for. I am thankful for the opportunities that lie ahead. I am thankful for the new ways in which St Kieran’s can serve and minister to the local community. I am thankful for all members of our school, especially our students. I suppose you could say that ‘gratitude is my attitude’. God bless, Johnathon Johnathon Greer, Assistant Principal – Religious Education

A MINUTE WITH MR MCLAUCHLAN s

Netball and Rugby League

Our Rugby League team put in a mighty effort on day 1 of our Interschool Rugby League Competition. Day 1 wrapped up with ‘The Saints’ walking away with a win against Townview, a loss against Barkly and draw against our sporting rivals Sunset. The defensive effort displayed by our boys in the final match proved that they are a massive chance for making the finals this Friday. A huge thank you to Mr Justin Perkins who kindly gave up his time to help coach the team on Wednesday. His insight into the game will be missed next Friday. Over at the Netball courts, our St Kieran’s netball team put in a mighty effort. For most of our team, this was their first competitive netball experience. They improved throughout the day and this was fantastic to see. They will only become more confident as they participate in day 2 of competition this Friday. A big thank you to Ms Kim Van Adrichem for coaching the team and getting the best out of our players.

Congratulations to Rico who was selected to represent Mount Isa at the Regional trials in Alpha a couple of weeks ago.
