CHURCHILL PRIMARY IN THE TOP 2% OF SCHOOLS NATIONALLY!! We have received a very complimentary letter from Nick Gibb, the Minister of State for School Reform. His letter congratulates all staff and children at Churchill Primary School on the very high standard of achievement in the 2015 phonics screening check, with 100% of pupils reaching or exceeding the pass mark. Our school is in the top 2% of all primary schools in the country. An amazing achievement! A full copy of the letter is on the website – on our Headteacher’s blog. Dear Mrs. Venning I am writing to convey my warmest congratulations to you, your staff and your pupils for the very high standard of achievement in the 2015 phonics screening check. We want to ensure that every child develops a firm grasp of phonics which is why I was so delighted to see your results. With 100% if pupils at Churchill Church of England Primary School reaching or exceeding the pass mark in the check, your school is in the top 2% of all primary schools in the country. This year’s figures show that 99% pupils who reach or exceed the pass mark in the phonics check go on to achieve at least the expected standard in key stage 1 reading, which underlines the importance of developing the ability to decode words effectively at an early age. I am pleased to learn that you have ensured that all Year 1 children in your school have a firm foundation in reading, from which they can develop further and become increasingly fluent readers. Thank you for your work in this vital area of a child’s early education and congratulations again to you and your staff for your hard work and professionalism. With best wishes Yours sincerely Nick Gibb MP
T@3 FRIDAY 6TH NOVEMBER This Friday Year 2 will be presenting the assembly at which parents of Year 2 pupils are warmly welcome. They will also be hosting T@3, so offers of help from Year 2 parents will be greatly appreciated. T@3 gives parents a chance to get together over a ‘cuppa’ and have a chat before picking up children. It is open to all parents across the school. Each term one class is given the chance to host this. The parents from that class all contribute by donating cakes or giving up their time to help set up, sell and clear away. Any money raised is normally given to the hosting class to use towards trips, shows and other special ‘extras’.
PARENTS’ EVENINGS A reminder that our parents’ evenings take place on Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th November. Appointment sign-up sheets are now available in classrooms. This year we will be inviting all children in Years 5 and 6 to attend the meetings with their parents. POPPIES As in previous years we will have been asked to sell poppies in the lead up to Remembrance Day. The school ambassadors will be taking them around the classrooms during the day and if you would like your child to purchase a poppy please send them to school with their donation. Thank you. AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS We apologise but due to staff training running club will not begin until after Christmas. Due to Parents’ Evenings photography club will NOT start until Wednesday, 18th November and French club will be cancelled next Tuesday, 10th. REMEMBRANCE SERVICE On Wednesday, 11th November the children will be attending a special service at St. Mary’s Church in Langford for Remembrance Day. We will be leaving school at approximately 10.30am. We would be very grateful if any parents would like to accompany the children to the church. Please let your class teacher know. CHILDREN IN NEED Friday, 13th November is Children in Need day. We have decided to celebrate this by coming to school in ‘the wrong clothes’ for a £1 donation. This could be wearing someone else’s clothes, inside out clothes or any other inventive idea. Staff are all going to join in! Cakes will be on sale during break for 20p – any donations of cakes will gratefully received. FLU VACCINATION We have been informed by Somerset School Nursing Team that they will be coming to school on Friday, 20th November to give the nasal flu vaccination for Years 1 &2. This is only for children whose parents informed the Health Authority that they would like their children to receive this. A letter with more details of the vaccination process will be sent shortly to parents and carers of those children who have requested the vaccination. FREE SCHOOL MEALS If you are in receipt of any benefits your child may be entitled to free school meals, even if your child is in KS1 you still need to apply.
