some nail-biting moments, the final whistle saw Rovers get over the line with a single-point victory.

U16A football County Final Valley Rovers 1-9 Macroom 1-8 Valley Rovers brought the U16A football county cup home to Innishannon after a magnificent victory against Macroom in CIT yesterday. Played on an excellent pitch (considering all the rain in the days leading up to it), this match was in the balance right up to the final whistle. Things got off to a poor start for the Rovers with Macroom scoring a goal and a point in the early minutes. This was particularly worrying given how Macroom had had the upper hand in the two previous meetings between the teams this year, plus the fact that a number of key Rovers players were unavailable through injury. However, rather than dropping their heads, the Valley Rovers lads got down to the task in hand. The fantastic Pa Hurley got things going with a well-taken soccer-style goal, followed by a point. Three other points by Adam Settini, Charlie Lyons (f) and Robert-Sean Sweetnam brought Rovers to 1-4 at the break, while some excellent defending limited Macroom to a just one additional point, bringing their tally to 1-2. This was a slender lead, especially given that Rovers had some wind assistance in the first period, but they were playing well at that stage, so were feeling reasonably confident. However, Macroom came out all guns blazing in the second half and a few early points put them back in the lead, while Rovers missed some scoring opportunities, so they were really up against it. Once again, they had to dig deep and the last quarter is when we saw the best attacking play of the match. Robert Sean Sweetnam got the first point of the half from a free. The Rovers players took on the Macroom defenders and forced more frees, three of which were scored by Charlie Lyons, who also got a point from play. With sixty minutes gone, Rovers were two points ahead, but Macroom are a formidable team that will never give up and they pushed up towards the Rovers goal. They managed one point in injury time and came very close to scoring a goal on more than one occasion, but the Rovers backs managed to keep them at bay and avoid giving away scorable frees. So, after

After a superb year, goalkeeper Cian O’Donovan was as secure as ever between the posts yesterday. Sean O’Donovan, who only recently moved to full back, was solid as a rock in that position in the previous match and again in yesterday’s final. John Patrick Muckian also came into the full back line at a late stage of the season and likewise showed his worth with tremendous defensive play, while Aaron Murphy in the other corner has never let the team down with his consistency, hard work and dedication all year. William Hurley was a commanding presence at centre back again yesterday and is a huge inspiration to everyone around him. Rory O’Sullivan at wing back was very involved and made great use of possession, turning defence to attack effectively, while Fearghal Lyons on the other wing has been a key figure all year, with his great stamina and tremendous fielding providing a major contribution to the team’s success. Midfield was always going to be a tough challenge yesterday again a strong Macroom pairing. James Callanan’s strength has been crucial to the team all year and he showed his worth again yesterday. Adam Healy also has great strength and speed and showed these attributes when the chips were down – his great run late in the game leading to a point at a critical stage. The half forward line has been key to Rovers’ scoring this year. Adam Settini’s speed made him a handful for the Macroom defence, especially with his great breaks up the wing in the second half. Charlie Lyons has been a great addition to the team and this was clearly in evidence yesterday, both from freetaking and from play, while another massive addition to Valley Rovers over the last year has been Pa Hurley, whose contribution right through the season has been immense, not least yesterday when it really mattered. In the full forward line, Robert-Sean Sweetnam got a couple of crucial scores, especially the one just before half time when it was really needed. Colm Barry was marked tightly but played an important role, not just in attack, but in limiting Macroom’s opportunities to

break up the field, while Sean Lynch worked hard for the team and showed great ability to get on the ball and was a real asset to the forward line. But this victory could not have happened without the contributions of all of the other players in the squad. Daniel Kenneally, Olan Fehily, Peter Callanan and Cathal Manning were unavailable for the final through injury. All four of them are excellent footballers and were hugely influential in earlier games in the championship and they were there on the sideline to give encouragement and support to their team-mates. Paul Ryan came on in the late stages of yesterday’s final and it is clear from his progress this year that he is a player with a future. The other subs yesterday, Patrick O’Sullivan, Jack Higgins and Mark O’Leary deserve a special mention as all three of them have been among the most committed of the whole squad and will be under age again next year and so we know we will be seeing plenty of them going forward. Other players who played their part with during the year included Jonathan Hurley and Shane Kelleher. As William Hurley acknowledged in his victory speech, the encouragement from the Rovers supporters yesterday was fantastic and there is no doubt that this gave the players a great boost when the going got tough. The U16A football championship started out with 32 teams from all over the county so winning it out after a long year was an outstanding achievement for all involved. Team:
