Understanding Jesus “She is a ray of sunshine.” Have you ever been compared to a thing or an object, perhaps a ray of sunshine, a brick wall, or a workhorse? Jesus, the world’s greatest teacher, often compared Himself to things to help people understand more about Him. #520

Jesus had the most important message ever. As God’s Son, Jesus had come from Heaven as a man. The people in His day had never met anyone like Him, and they had never heard anyone teach like He taught. Jesus used word pictures in His teaching. He compared Himself with things His listeners were familiar with. As the people pictured each object and pondered the comparison, they understood more about Jesus. For example, we all know what light is. Jesus compared Himself to light by saying “I am the light of the world” (John 9:5). Let’s look at several “I am” statements Jesus made so that we can understand more about Him. Light. One day as he healed a blind man and gave him sight, Jesus said “I am the light of the world.” Just as Jesus brought light to the blind man’s eyes, He brings spiritual light into our hearts. Without Jesus, our lives are dark and sinful. Jesus said “Light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil” (John 3:19). When you turn on the light in a dark room, what happens to the darkness? It leaves! In the same way, the light of Jesus takes sin out of our lives. Jesus said, “He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12). The Door. “I am the door.” Every day we go in and out of doors. A door symbolizes access—if the door to a room is shut, we cannot get in. Jesus compared Himself to a door because it is only through Him that we can “go into” salvation. Jesus said, “I

am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved” (John 10:9). Jesus is our only access to God’s forgiveness and grace. Bread. “I am the bread of life.” In Jesus’ time, bread was one of the main foods. Physically, we need food and water to stay alive. Spiritually, we need “spiritual food” to stay alive. Without Jesus, we will die forever. Jesus said, “I am the living bread which

Grace and truth come by Jesus Christ. came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live forever” (John 6:51). Does your life feel empty? Jesus said, “I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst” (John 6:35). The Good Shepherd. Sheep were common in Jesus’ day. The person who took care of sheep was a shepherd. Jesus said “I am the good shepherd.” During the day, the shepherd stayed out with his sheep as they grazed grass. He made sure they had water to drink and kept them from wandering off and getting lost. At night the shepherd took the sheep into an enclosure called a sheepfold. There they were safe from wild animals looking for a meal. Day and night, the shepherd watched over his sheep, protecting them from every danger. A good shepherd cared for his sheep so much that he would give his life to defend them. Jesus compared Himself to a shepherd

who cares deeply for his sheep. Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep” (John 10:11). When Jesus died on the cross, He was giving His life for His sheep—you and me. The Way. “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” We use GPS and maps to get where we want to go. But how do we get to God? What is the way to Heaven? Jesus answered those questions when He said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). The Truth. Jesus cannot lie, because He is the truth. In our world, we sometimes don’t know who we can trust. But we know we can trust Jesus. Everything He taught was true. The Life. In addition to being the way and the truth, Jesus is life. God will

Jesus is Life and Light. give eternal life to anyone who believes Jesus’ teaching and trusts and obeys Him. “God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life” (1 John 5:11, 12). Do you want to know more about Jesus?
