No-Cost Extension Request Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) When are No-Cost Extension Requests due? • A No-Cost Extension Request is due 30 days prior to the end date of the final funding year. What if the total unexpended funds are $20,000 or less than the total annual awarded funds? • A formal request is required regardless of the amount of unexpended funds. What if we do not want to use the unexpended funds? • The unexpended funds must be returned to the Simons Foundation within 60 days following the end date of the grant, as noted in the award letter. Why must we submit a No-Cost Extension Request 30 days prior to the end date of the funding year? • No-Cost Extension Requests are due 30 days before the end date of the last funding period so that the Simons Foundation can approve or deny the extension of the grant and the use of the funds before the start date of the requested No-Cost Extension. Do I have to submit a Renewal or Final Scientific Progress Report if I submit a No-Cost Extension Request? • You do not need to submit a Renewal Scientific Progress Report. The No-Cost Extension Request includes the Renewal Scientific Progress Report. • You must submit a Final Scientific Progress Report 60 days following the end of the NoCost Extension Period. Are No-Cost Extension Requests the same as Carry Forward Requests? • No. Different forms are used, with different requirements. • A Carry Forward should be used to request to carry forward unexpended funds from one funding period to the next funding period. • A No-Cost Extension should be used to extend the end date of a grant and to request to use unexpended funds during this period without requesting additional funding. What period should be reported in the No-Cost Extension Request? • Only the most recently completed funding period should be reported in the No-Cost Extension Request. • The No-Cost Extension Request is not a cumulative report of the entire project to date. What if I have a Subcontract? • The contact Principal Investigator’s institution will submit a No-Cost Extension Request for any subcontract. • The contact Principal Investigator (PI) must submit one overall No-Cost Extension Request for the entire project, even if the contact PI’s institution is not requesting a No-Cost Extension. • Do not submit a separate No-Cost Extension Request form for the subcontract. What if I have multiple PIs at different institutions? • The contact PI must submit one overall No-Cost Extension Request for the entire project, even if the PIs are at different institutions and not everyone is requesting a No-Cost Extension. Is there a page limit? • No, but the reports should be concise.
