Northwest Nazarene’s McKenna Walker drives the lane for 2 against Seattle Pacific on Saturday. After scoring an 86-58 win on New Year’s Eve over St. Martin’s, the Crusaders capped their weekend with a 66-65 victory over then 1st-place Seattle Pacific on Saturday night at the Johnson Sports Center.

News:

A New Year’s weekend filled with mixed results at the Johnson Sports Center was highlighted by a pair of happy final scores for the Crusader ladies. Riding high off a victory in their home debut before the Christmas break, the Northwest Nazarene women’s basketball team continued to roll, scoring a Great Northwest Athletic Conference sweep of St. Martin’s and Seattle Pacific. The NNU men tried to make New Year’s Eve a night to celebrate, rallying from a 6-point deficit in the final 30 seconds to force overtime, only to fall against visiting Concordia. Still hurting from the OT loss, the NNU men fell Saturday hosting No. 3-ranked Western Oregon, capping the weekend’s action on the home hardwood. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: The Crusaders gave their fans plenty to celebrate on New Year’s Eve as everything went perfectly in an 86-58 victory for NNU over visiting St. Martin’s. The Crusader defense clicked: SMU shot 24 percent from the field (12-of-50) and turned the ball over 17 times. NNU’s offense hummed along: 4 players scored in double digits and NNU shot

CoCo Gall had 16 points in the win, while Ellie Logan and McKenna Walker each added 12 points. Logan also grabbed 8 rebounds for NNU. Nampa High product and freshman Raquel Jardine had one of best nights of her college career, scoring 10 points and grabbing 7 boards, and senior point guard Taylor Simmons added 6 points, 6 assists and 4 steals in the win. Riding high off the big victory, the NNU ladies played a tough Seattle Pacific team on Saturday and battled nip-and-tuck with the 1st-place Falcons into the fleeting moments. NNU used a 7-2 surge in the final 2 1/2 minutes to finish off the comeback win, getting a game-high 19 points from Logan, who was named GNAC Player of the Week for her efforts. Simmons added 12 points in the win, while Gall, Walker and Danielle Jardine each added 7 points for NNU, with Jardine also grabbing 6 rebounds. ON TAP: After a victorious 3-game home-stand the Crusaders find themselves back on the road, and again battling a 1st-place foe in Western Washington on Thursday night. NNU looks to snap a 9-game skid versus WWU, which has won 7 of its last 8 games and is 4-0 in GNAC play. The Crusaders then close out a quick 2-game road-trip at Simon Fraser on Saturday night. MEN’S BASKETBALL: A determined comeback wasn’t enough which started a disheartening weekend at home for the Crusader men. NNU erased a 73-67 deficit with less than 30 seconds to play as Bouna N’Diaye scored twice and Mike Wright tied the game with 2 free throws, forcing overtime versus visiting Concordia on New Year’s Eve. But once into the extra session — where NNU has won twice this season, including exhibition play — the game slipped away as the Cavaliers notched an 8783 win on the Crusaders home hardwood, snapping a 6-game home win streak. Detwon Rogers led the way with 22 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals for NNU, which also got 18 points and 4 assists from Wright, and 14 points and 10 rebounds from Joel Devastey. Still stinging from Thursday’s heartbreaker, the Crusaders played a great first half but couldn’t keep up with No. 3-ranked Western Oregon, falling 75-53 on Saturday night. Devastey led the way with 10 points while N’Diaye added 8 points and 6 rebounds and Kyle Bailey chipped in 7 points and 6 boards for NNU.
