LOCAL GROUP NEWS: MARCH 2014

LOCAL POLLUTION LEVELS: JOINT PROJECT WITH CLIENT EARTH On 4 February four members of hf cyclists, joined by Andrea Lee from Client Earth set off to place 33 small NO2 detection tubes around Hammersmith Gyratory and Shepherds Bush Green. They will be collected and replaced on 4 March, with the replaced tubes being collected a month later. We hope to get the results sometime in April. London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham measures NO2 / pollution in a few locations around the Borough, but at a height of 3m. Our tests are to show if NO2 pollution levels are higher in places where the NO2 may be concentrated because of the local geometry and prevailing winds. We also want to see if the levels are higher at breathing height and push-chair height. We hope to use the results to inform and influence those making traffic decisions at Hammersmith Gyratory and Shepherds Bush Green. If the results turn out to be of general interest we will consider how to broadcast them more widely. See where we’ve placed the tubes below:

HAMMERSMITH BRIDGE Soon there will be a consultation on Hammersmith Bridge, which will include proposals for a 20mph speed limit over it. We are urging London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham to include the following points in this consultation: 1. Return of the double yellow lines to their normal position next to the kerb. Reason: They were inconsistent across the bridge, and we do not object to motor vehicles overtaking cyclists where there is room.

2. A broken white line over the bridge to indicate the width of the road at the pinch points. Reason: In our survey last year some cyclists found the double yellow lines useful as an indicator of how far out the next pinch point would be.

3. Before each pinch point, display a large cycle logo marking on the roadway with the word “priority”. Reason: To encourage cyclists to cycle on the bridge without the fear of expecting to have to merge with faster traffic. There is no room to separate cyclists and motor traffic side-by-side at the pinch points, so they must be separated one in front of the other.

4. A sign at the start of the bridge saying: “Do not overtake cyclists at the pinch points” Reason: To make the Bridge less threatening for cyclists. The message reinforces the road markings. Normally such signs refer to “Narrow lanes”, but we only want the sign to refer to the pinch points.
