#65 KANSAS (4-8, 0-2) vs. WEST VIRGINIA (9-4, 0-1) March. 22, 2015 >> 12 p.m. CT Series: Kansas leads, 2-0 >> Lawrence, Kan.

THE BASELINE Kansas will continue its five-match homestand when it plays host to Big 12 Conference foes Iowa State and West Virginia. KU moved up to No. 65 in the latest ITA rankings, its highest of the 2014-15 season. The 65th-ranked Jayhawks welcome Iowa State on Friday, March 20 for a 3:30 p.m., match at the Jayhawk Tennis Center and will then host West Virginia, Sunday, March 22 at noon. THE SERIES: KANSAS VS. IOWA STATE Kansas leads the all-time series with Iowa State, 40-3. The Jayhawks have won the last three matchups between the two programs, including the last meeting in 2014 when KU dominated the Cyclones, 6-1, in Ames. The stellar doubles duo consisting of junior Maria Jose Cardona and senior Maria Belen Luduena are the only returners from last season who have faced Iowa State. The pair took down Iowa State doubles pair Meghan Cassens and Ana Gasparovic 8-6. The tandem also each left Ames with singles victories that day, Cardona having defeated Cassens, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0, and Luduena defeating Gasparovic, 6-1, 6-0. SCOUTING THE CYCLONES Iowa State enters Friday’s match at Kansas with a 6-8 overall mark. The Cyclones opened Big 12 Conference play March 13, with a 4-3 win over West Virginia. The Cyclones opened the 2015 dual-match season with a shut-out win over Omaha followed by both a win and a loss at the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk series. Iowa State then dropped four-consecutive matches including a 2-4 loss to Big 12 rival Oklahoma. Iowa State has won three out of its last four matches and are led by senior, Meghan Cassens who boast the best singles record on the team at 9-4 in the No. 3 position. She is assisted by sophomore Samantha Budai who when paired with senior, Ksenia Pronina have recorded the best doubles record on the team having gone 7-4 at the No. 1 position thus far on the season. THE SERIES: KANSAS VS. WEST VIRGINIA Kansas leads the all-time series with West Virginia, 2-0. The Jayhawks have taken each of the two matches against the Mountaineers since they joined the Big 12 Conference, including a 7-0 win in Morgantown in 2014. Again, Cardona and Luduena each won their singles matches against WVU and paired up for a doubles win for KU in 2014. SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS West Virginia enters the weekend as one of the most improved teams in the NCAA. The Mountaineers are currently 9-4 overall in 2015 after posting a 3-18 overall mark a season ago. WVU is 0-1 in Big 12 action, having dropped a 4-3 decision to Iowa State in its conference opener. Sophomore Kaja Mrgole leads the way at No. 1 singles with a 9-3 overall mark, while freshman Carolina Lewis is undefeated, a perfect 100, while playing on courts five and six.

HEAD COACH Todd Chapman wasted little time making his mark on the Kansas women’s tennis program. Chapman, who was named head women’s tennis coach at KU in June 2013, led the Jayhawks to their highest ranking in 14 years, as they checked in at as high as No. 33 during the 2013-14 season. Chapman, who helped coach Texas Tech to the 2012 and 2013 Big 12 regular-season titles, guided Kansas to eightconsecutive wins to open his inaugural season at the helm of the Jayhawk program. As an assistant coach at Tech for four years, Chapman helped elevate the Red Raiders from eighth place in the Big 12 in 2009 to the school’s first-ever bids to the NCAA Tournament in 2012 and 2013. Over his last three seasons in Lubbock he helped Tech achieve its highest national rankings in school history -- 39th in 2011, 17th in 2012 and 15th in 2013. Tech reached the second round of the team competition in 2013’s NCAA Tournament, and their AllBig 12 duo of Samantha Adams and Kenna Kilgo reached the NCAA round of 16 in the doubles draw.

Chapman spent two years (1999-2001) as the head men’s and women’s coach at the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma, an NAIA school in Chickasha, Oklahoma. There, his teams achieved national rankings of No. 17 (men) and No. 15 (women), and made back-to-back appearances in the NAIA Tournament. Chapman earned success as a head coach at the high school level as well, leading Wichita Falls (Texas) High School to three-straight Class 4A state quarterfinals (2006-08). As a player at Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma, (1994-98), Chapman helped his team to four NCAA Division II Tournaments and a national ranking as high as No. 12. The two-time Lone Star Conference ScholarAthlete achieved a national ranking in doubles as high as 17. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach (199899) for his alma mater’s men’s and women’s teams, both of whom were ranked in the Top 25. Chapman and his wife, Amy, have five daughters: Lauren, Madison, Katelyn, Avary and Karsen.

Prior to his tenure at Texas Tech, Chapman earned Southland Conference Coach of the Year honors as head men’s and women’s coach at the University of Texas-Pan American (2001-03). He led UTPA to its first national ranking in 12 years and to a second-place finish in the Southland, the highest conference finish in the school’s history.
