School Nurse Field Trip Procedure When field trip is planned, teacher needs to provide list of students attending to the registered nurse at least four weeks prior to trip. Registered Nurse and Principal may need to plan which trained personnel attends the field trip to meet student’s medical needs. While this time line may seem lengthy to most teachers, it is possible that people attending the field trip will need training in medication administration to meet the student’s needs. La. Rev. Stat. Ann. §§17:81, 17:436.1 Protocols and procedures for personnel attending field trips: 1. No student can be denied a field trip due to lack of personnel available to meet their mobility, health, and/or safety needs. 2. When students with non-complex nursing needs are attending the field trip, any of the medication/procedure trained personnel on campus may be appointed by the Principal to attend. 3. If any students who receive Special Ed services are attending the field trip and the Special Ed teacher/para is trained in non-complex procedures, she/he may be a candidate to attend with the student. 4. The LPN on campus is mandated to attend a field trip only if a student with complex nursing needs is going on the trip. 5. Parents are a resource and they can be invited to attend their child’s field trip to take care of their needs, but they cannot be mandated to attend. 6. Personnel such as secretaries, guidance counselors, regular education teachers or other individuals trained in delegable medical procedures can attend. 7. Overnight trips or trips that fall outside of the hours of a typical school day are an exception. These details must be discussed with the parents, the moderator, and the principal to see how best to meet the needs of the student. Other parents attending may be consulted by the parent to see if they would be willing to assist with their child’s needs.
Form D However, the school has the ultimate responsibility to provide for the student’s medical needs on school-sponsored field trips.
