Help give crime a going-away party! Tuesday, August 3, 2010 Every year, on the second Tuesday in August, the Vernon Hills Police Department throws a big party for the community. This event happens all over the country! The purpose is to unite the community and show criminals that we do NOT want crime in our neighborhoods. This year, we will continue our volleyball competition, plus we’ll have free food and entertainment. For more information, or to see what we did last year, check out our website: www.vhpd.com, under the “Upcoming Events” tab. We’re always looking for new teams to play against, so get your neighbors together and try to “beat the cops!”

A Few Simple Steps to Protect Yourself in Your Car Here are some things to think about every time you get in your car: • Lock your car doors, even while driving. Many car- jackings occur at red lights, stop signs or drive-thrus. • When going to the gas station, turn off your car and lock your doors when going to pay the attendant. Thieves love to sneak into your passenger seat while

you aren’t paying attention. When returning to your parked car, be aware of the surroundings. Glance in the back seat and under the car before opening car doors. Install an anti-theft device that has a "panic" button you can activate if you sense trouble Drive in the center lane when on highways: this reduces your chances of becoming a "bump and run" theft victim.

Home Security Checklist Yes

All doors and windows are locked at night and every time we leave the house, even if it’s for, “just a few minutes!” This includes the door from the attached garage into the house.

All entryways have working, keyed entry lock and a deadbolt.

The outside is well-lit every night.

Since I use a timer when I’m away so lights go on every night, my home always looks occupied.

I never hide a key outside because bad guys know all the hiding places, even the “secret” ones!

My windows have been drilled and pinned, because locks can be jimmied, but pins can’t!

My trees and shrubs have been trimmed so criminals don’t have a place to hide.

I have secured my sliding door with a bar on the bottom and screws on the top.

My house number is clearly displayed so Police and other Emergency vehicles can find my address easily.

Gate latches, garage doors and shed doors are all locked with security padlocks.

Bicycles are always locked up, even if left for “just a minute!.”

Grills, lawn mowers and other valuables are locked up.

I have taken an inventory of my valuables and have up to date photographs of them.

I have engraved all my large valuables with my driver’s license number and I have written down all serial numbers.

When I’m going to be away for more than one day, I arrange for someone to pick-up my mail and newspaper, or I suspend my delivery.
