S

t. Mark’s Church, Altadena, will begin its annual Christmas tree sale November 1. Trees may be pre-purchased online until Nov. 17 at www.SaintMarksChristmas Trees.org. Pickup will be Dec. 7, 8 - 11 a.m. Available trees include Douglas firs (5 to 9 foot), Noble Firs (4 to 10 foot) and Grand Firs (5 to 10 foot). They are delivered to St. Mark’s two days after being harvested. “They are fragrant, fresh and full,” according to a release from the congregation. “We always delight in the quality and appearance of the trees. These are not your corner lot trees that sit for weeks after cutting before they reach your home.” Tree sale proceeds benefit the Pasadena Bad Weather Shelter sponsored by Friends in Deed of Pasadena (for more information visit www.ecpac.net/bad_weather.html). Trees may also be purchased for donation to a needy local family through the Pasadena Police PAL program (for more information, visit www.ci.pasadena.ca.us/police). Representatives from St. Mark’s are available to visit congregations during Sunday services on November 3, 10 and 17 to take orders in person; contact Tom Horner at [email protected] to make arrangements. For more information call the parish office at 626.798.8858. St. Mark’s Church is located at 1050 E Altadena Drive, Altadena 91001. ?

ou’ve heard Bejamin Franklin’s famous expression that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” This reality is proving true in the new efforts launched in local congregations through our recent series of diocesan Community Safety Forums. More than 200 Episcopalians, clergy and lay, turned out to join L.A. County Sheriff Lee Baca, Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens and Santa Barbara Congresswoman Lois Capps, among other experts, to act upon best practices and next steps for increased safety in our local congregations and neighborhoods. For a number of congregations, this work is being expressed in new emergency plans taking shape with the Diocesan Disaster Response Team, led by the Rev. Canon Michael Bamberger assisted by Canon Bruce Linsenmayer. A starting point in their work is provided online at www.episcopalrelief.org by Episcopal Relief & Development. Clergy and lay leaders may also contact Michael and Bruce directly through the office of Church of the Ascension, Sierra Madre. In each of the five county-based forums, held from early August to mid-October, we looked carefully at the relationships between domestic violence, mental illness, and the need for gun safety. We advocated for new steps of gun safety as a matter of public health, and we

heard updates from representatives of local Brady Campaign chapters. Partnering with the diocesan Program Group on Peace and Justice Ministries, we provided posters and local contact telephone numbers for domestic violence response lines. We also highlighted programs teaching children and youth how to respond proactively in the event of a violent attack. In each forum, we addressed practical steps that congregations can take for evacuation and securing of church grounds in the event of a violent outburst. We heard from local police officers and sheriff’s deputies about best practices, and we learned from sharing with clergy and wardens about posting emergency information and conducting drills among worship leaders and staff to practice response actions. The Diocesan Disaster Response Team is also working in one-on-one consultations, first with congregations in Riverside County as part of a pilot initiative. Any cleric or lay leader desiring more information on these efforts may call the Bishop’s Office or the diocesan Community Relations Office at 213.482.2040, ext. 240. Thank you for your ongoing efforts to increase God’s peace in our communities. ?

The Rev. Victoria Mouradian, interim associate rector at All Saints by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, Santa Barbara, delivers an invovation on Oct. 19 as parishioners from All Saints and El Montecito Presbyterian Church, Montecito Covenant Church and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church prepare to start a two-mile hike through Montecito. The event raised money for Destined for Grace, a nonprofit group that works to bring educational opportunities to children in Haiti.
