February 12, 2019 Dear Faculty, Staff, Students and Patrons of USD 443, Re: Valentine Message I remember that day in my sixth-grade classroom in Jetmore, KS as well as the students that were in my class. I laid the chalk on the blackboard tray right in the middle of a math lesson and charged into a random story. “I had a dream last night that I drove to Sterling College to see my girlfriend, and I asked her to go for a walk. When we got to the clock-tower on campus I stopped and pulled a ring from my coat pocket and asked her to marry me, and she said, ‘Yes!’” “Then,” I continued, “I pinched myself, and I wasn’t dreaming!” I distinctly remember that a few girls got it immediately and let out a scream. I guess that the boys in the class were not near as interested in a love story as, possibly, one of my sports or car stories that were more the norm for this 26-year-old teacher. Eventually, others caught on after some explaining. I shared that I did get engaged that night for real! I cannot remember the exact day, but it was near Valentine’s Day. What I can say is as we celebrate Valentine’s in our many different ways, I wanted to give you a glimpse of my special love on this special occasion. How lucky I am that the “girlfriend” in the story is still my wife of 31 years and mother to my five children. Happy Valentine’s Day to Susan Dierksen and all faculty, staff, students, and patrons of USD 443!
