Ohio Ballstars Frequently Asked Questions *What is the primary philosophy (goal or expectation) that you are trying to communicate to the kids you are coaching? We want our kids to know what hard work is all about and make sure they know that it pays off. We stress the little things in our program, encourage our players to be the athletes that set themselves apart from the crowd. Our coaches/mentors will push the boys to become leaders, talk on the court, dive on the floor, take the charge!!!, make the extra pass, and do some of those things that aren't done by the majority of youth and even high school basketball players in the city. We focus on fundamentals, discipline, intensity and teamwork and do this in a safe and fun family like environment.
*When are your tryouts and who evaluates them? They are currently scheduled for the end of February, dates will be posted on the Ohio Ballstars website. Joshua and Trey Hardin will make all final calls, but our coaching staff will be on hand to provide input. Our program does our best to stay away from parent coaches, in rare occasions we will allow parents to help assist with a team if they show the passion and have knowledge of the game and coaching experience.
*How are your teams made up, how many players do you typically carry on a team? We have grown over the past 8 years by doubling in numbers in each of our first four years and last year we had more than 200 players in our program. We realized when we had over 300 kids tryout for our program that we couldn't cut everyone and offer only premier high level teams, so we structured our program with different levels. This year we plan to have 1 premier team in each age group, if we find that we have the talent for multiple teams there may be 2 teams in some age groups. This will allow us to focus and dedicate more time to the student athletes in our program, more assistant coaches, better overall coach/mentor to student athlete ratio. The number of players per team depends on the coach at that level and the dynamics of the players involved. It should be from 8 to 10 players.
*How many games do you play in a season, is this mostly league or tournament play? Pending on age group and talent of team, 4 to 12 tournaments (3 game min. plus tourney round, sometimes up to 7+games, and league play (10 games)
*Do you practice during the season? What’s a typical practice session, if you have them? We definitely practice during the season, we are a program that believes all our athletes need more time fine tuning all the skills. Our program is much more than just tournaments and games, and if someone is looking to just play games, our program is not the right fit.
Very rigorous practices, that are structured like a high school/college practice. There will be 2 practices a week led by the coach, going over fundamentals and our discussed philosophies above, and plays, scrimmages with our teams and other programs. There may be additional/optional open gyms and skills sessions provided for all players/teams some weeks.
