State of Oklahoma Field Divisions

Demo Scrub Seal Project  Location  Field Division 3  SH-19 Near Ada, OK

 Scope  Scrub seal a one mile roadway section  Supplier operated brush trailer with ODOT providing labor and chip operations

 Date of Project  Summer of 2016

Heavily Distressed

Horizontal Curve

Segment with Crack Seal - Removed Prior to Scrub Seal.

Finished Product

Overlap and Ridges

Variable Depth Areas

Scrub Seal Project

 What we learned  Horizontal curves made it difficult to keep the oil even across the lanes.  Maintenance crew had to hand brush the oil from the low point back to the road surface  Inconsistencies in areas being treated caused the formation of longitudinal overlapping of oil and chips

Finished Product

Micro-surface Project

 Location  Field Division 4  SH-3 in Canadian County, OK

 Scope  Micro-surface a 15 mile roadway section

 Date of Project  Fall 2009

What Went Wrong?

Contractor got off to a slow start and had to redo some areas. Rough texture and inconsistency brought attention. Public became aware and unhappy with product and project intent.

Numerous Thermal Cracks

Some are very extensive.

Micro-surface Project  What we learned  Pick a more suitable candidate roadway sections for thin treatments.  Public has expectations when they see work going on. Slow start and un-remedied bumps at cracks brought attention that started a media frenzy.  Due to the pavement condition, the roadway section was a better candidate for minor / major rehabilitation  Micro Surface is performing well at 8 years of age. Best road there is between the thermal cracks.
