Sunday 25 September Optional post-conference educational sessions (not included in the registration fee) Radisson Blu Hotel 09.00–12.30 Writer or Humble Servant? Ros Schwartz Translation Masterclass in Malmö on September 25 with Ros Schwartz (Maximum 12 people) Aimed at non-literary translators, this hands-on masterclass will focus on questions of style. No experience of literary translation is needed – this is an invitation to hone your writing skills. The aim is for attendees to feel emboldened and to leave armed with concrete techniques they can apply to their specific field of technical or commercial translation. Ros Schwartz found that applying her literary translation skills to commercial work and producing polished prose, no matter how mundane the subject matter or clunky the original text, is one factor that sets top-end translators apart. And commercial translators offering stylistically polished work – adaptations rather than straightforward translations – can charge higher rates and build rewarding relationships with loyal customers. Part of the challenge lies in having the confidence to see yourself as a writer rather than as a humble servant. In this session we will analyse a range of English texts in translation to identify ways they can be improved stylistically. Note: This session is aimed not only at English mother-tongue translators. There will be plenty of take-aways for translators working from other language combinations who have a very highlevel of English
