Organization Constitution Article I: Name

A.

The official name of the organization is Equestrian Team and Club at UCSB.

Article II: Purpose

A.

The purpose of the organzation is to offer students the opportunity to participate in instructional, competitive, and recreational equestrian activities. There is no experience needed in order to join the club team. Everyone who wishes to participate is welcome. The team will have different levels of riding. Not all members are required to ride. Due to budget and a limited amount of horses supplied by other schools, not all riders will be able to compete. If necessary due to a rush of interested students, try-outs will be held at the beginning of the year for students interested in competing. The club is a student organization. Students initiate, develop, and organize the team, under the guidance of the coach. The success of the team can be attributed solely to the dedication of the students who run it.

Spirit of Competition: "Sport activities find their origin in the basic human need for the spirit of play. Winning and losing are mere outcomes of this play spirit. What is part of the game is the pure satisfaction of participation...without your opponent; you have no game, no contesf and no fun. You are indebted to them, as they are to you. The spirit of play then, is based on cooperation. Upholding high standards of integrity and fair play acknowledges this idea of cooperative competition. All players are encouraged to exercise good judgment in caring for the safety of others as well as themselves. At UCSB, an intentional violation of the rules is considered cheating and a gross offense against the spirit of competition. Abusive language toward offrcials, other participants and manipulation of the rules are not "part of the game." A lifetime interest in sports is good for all players, which has more meaning than that of a win or a loss, the memory of which often fades quickly. All players are asked to participate within the context of this spirit of play/competition." -UCSB Sports Club Handbook

The team will not transport any horses to shows. Instead, the club of the university sponsoring the event will provide the horses.

According to the official IHSAwebsite: "The IHSApromotes competition for riders of all skill levels, who compete individually and as teams at regional, zone, and national levels. The association was founded on the principle that any college student should be able to participate in horse shows regardless of his or her financial status or riding level. Emphasis is on learning, sportsmanship, and fun. Competition plays a role but the students' enthusiasm and team spirit are the major factors. The objective of IHSA competition is to offer the opportunity to riders in their first years of riding as well as to students with show experience. Eliminating the expense of shipping or even owning horses puts IHSA competitions within reach of many who would otherwise miss the equestrian experience.

... Teams do not move horses to shows. Riders from all colleges ride horses provided by the host college, drawing lots for mounts. Riders draw whatever tack happens to be on the horse they've drawn. There is no schooling time; riders mount, adjust stimrps, and ride in before the judge.

In the northeast most shows are indoors and are held throughout the school year, while in the Rocky Mountain states shows are in the fall and spring so as to avoid winter travel, and the south and west commonly have outdoor shows."
