OUACHITA vs. ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO: 2014 RECAP

MONTICELLO, Ark. – The ninth-ranked Ouachita Tigers defeated the Boll Weevils of Arkansas Monticello 47-10 to improve to 9-0 and clinch at a least a share of the Great American Conference Championship. Brandon Marks scored a game-high three touchdowns for the Tigers and Josh Hall finished with a season-high seven tackles. The Tigers dominated both sides of the football in the first half. Offensively, the Tigers 283 first-half yards, gaining 14 first downs and putting 44 points on the board. On defense, Ouachita held UAM to six first downs and 84 yards of total offense. Ouachita scored on its opening drive with a five-yard touchdown run by Steven Kehner. The drive started with a 46-yard pass from quarterback Kiehl Frazier to Ke’Vontae Pope. Kehner would cover 18 yards on three carries and punch it in. The Tigers covered 64 yards on four plays. The Tiger defense stopped UAM on two-consecutive drives, the second ending with a sack by defensive end Dave Fair. On its ensuing possession, Ouachita would cap off a 69-yard drive with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Frazier to Brandon Marks, giving the Tigers a 14-0 lead. After a sack by Kyle Lamothe appeared to end the next UAM drive, Ouachita was flagged for roughing the Boll Weevil punter. UAM was forced to punt again after linebacker Mike Williamson’s pass breakup on a third and six play. After forcing another Boll Weevil punt to start the second quarter, return specialist Etauj Allen returned it back 36 yards and start the next Ouachita drive at the UAM 29 yard line. Brandon Marks scored his second touchdown of the game, this time on a four-yard rush. Leading 21-0, the Tigers scored on the next two possessions. Frazier threw for his second touchdown pass of the day, finding Pope in the back corner of the end zone to make it 28-0. After a bad UAM snap went out of the back of the end zone for a Tiger safety, Pope broke off a 40-yard return to set the Tigers up on the UAM 23. Brandon Marks carried on three consecutive plays to score his third touchdown of the game. After both teams exchanged turnovers, UAM drove down to the Ouachita 17 yard line with under 20 seconds remaining in the half. Ouachita safety Ricardy Joseph picked off a UAM pass at the one-yard line and returned it 99 yards for the score. The half ended with Ouachita leading 44-0. At the end of the first half, Steven Kehner had 15 carries for 96 yards. Kiehl Frazier went 4-10-1 for 85 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed three times for 69 yards. Dave Fair and Mike Williamson led the Tigers with four tackles at halftime. Playing their second and third team, Ouachita’s only score in the second half came from freshman Shelton Wooley’s 22-yard field goal. The Boll Weevils scored the final 10 points of the game in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Hunter Leppert threw for one touchdown pass and kicker Jaime McGee was true from 33 yards out. Ouachita gained 345 yards of total offense, while allowing UAM to gain 282. Ouachita went 6-6 in the red zone, with five scores coming via touchdowns. The Tigers committed a season-low three penalties in the game.

TODD KNIGHT

After 16 seasons as head coach at Ouachita, Todd Knight is the longest standing college head football coach in Arkansas. He has proven to be a strong leader as he heads the Ouachita program with integrity and passion. Knight has guided the Tiger program through the infant stages of NCAA Division II, from the Lone Star Conference, the Gulf South Conference and now the Great American Conference. Steady improvement began in 2002 and 2003 which marked solid squads that would help build the future of Ouachita football. In the inaugural 2011 campaign, Knight led the Tigers to their first ever Great American Conference championship, the first conference championship for the Tigers in over 20 years. The longest tenured coach in the GAC and the Tigers claimed the conference championship once again in 2014, and Knight was named GAC Coach of the Year in both championship seasons. Knight was also named 2014 AFCA Region Three Coach of the Year. Knight has established Ouachita as an elite program among all Division II institutions. He boasts Great American Conference Championships in 2011 and 2014 and 56 All-Great American Conference players in just four years. The team is the only program in the state of Arkansas to boast seven consecutive winning seasons, cracking the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 in six of seven of those seasons. The team has been ranked as high as seventh in the AFCA poll, and Ouachita finished the 2014 season ranked 10th in all of Division II. Knight leads both on and off the field, and his players have been recognized for being outstanding achievers on the field, in the classroom and in the community. He has recruited and coached six professional football players, 133 All-Conference players, 20 All-Americans, three Honorable Mention All-Americans, 30 Academic All-Conference players and many GSC honor roll athletes. During the 2014 season, the Tigers finished the regular season 10-0 for the first time in program history. After winning the its second GAC championship, Ouachita earned the top seed in the region for the Tigers’ first ever appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament. The Tigers finished the year with one Academic All-American, two All-Americans, six All-Region selections and 18 All-Conference selections. Ouachita also had a player named to the 2014 AFCA Allstate Good Works Team. Knight’s seniors have had a 90% graduation rate and the team has been involved in service to the community for many years. He has been quoted in saying that one of the most gratifying things in coaching is watching his players grow into the total man during their time at Ouachita, graduate and go on to be successful in all aspects of life. Knight’s development at head coach has come under solid leadership, playing under coach Buddy Benson at Ouachita, and later coaching under Red Parker and Don Skelton at Delta State from 1986-1989 and David Lee at the University of Texas at El Paso from 1990-1992. When he returned to Delta State as head coach from 1993-1998, he led the team to its first ever GSC Championship in 1998, also earning GSC Coach of the Year honors that year. Knight was named to the AFCA Board of Trustees following the conclusion of the 2012 football season, adding to his list of accolades. He also served on the NCAA Rules Committee, helping to make changes and restructure the rules for the game of college football along with coaches from around the country.
