October 11, 2016 PROGRAM: Our program was presented by Jim Hinkle, Executive Director of TwoCor, a nonresidential treatment facility for troubled youth that specializes in vocational training. Jim is a Colorado College graduate with a master’s in social work and doctor of divinity degree from Princeton. He had his start in social work at Dale House in 1983 working with troubled youth. After living in the East, he wanted to return to the West. TwoCor was started 12 1/2 years ago and assists troubled youth from ages 14 to 19 to learn how to work. Many do not have a father figure and do not know how to work. TwoCor assists both boys and girls, many of them victims of childhood trauma. He cited a Kaiser Permanente study in San Diego that found trauma of any sort during childhood is a measure of health problems into adulthood. He noted that childhood trauma affects brain development, particularly in pathways in the frontal cortex. This contributes to an inability to develop viable work habits. Under TwoCor’s program there is an orientation, followed by a learning lab, working on projects, and finally working with private businesses. The program involves a process of dealing not only with environmental problems, but is based on science so that youth see the value of work and are able to dress, concentrate, be on time and otherwise participate in being productive. TwoCor’s annual budget is about $900,000, and funded by government contracts, Aspen Pointe, grants, and individual donors. NEWS NOTES: Donations were for Silver Key. Rick noted that besides bell ringing, Salvation Army has an adopt-a-child program and stocking stuffing for the holidays. Key Club may be interested in bell ringing. HAPPY DOLLARS: Burl, grandson’s marriage; Rick for speaker’s presentation; Jack, grandson at El Pomar Youth Complex; Al for trip to Durango; Belinda, Warren, Rex and Tammy, just happy.
