OUTDOOR SOCCER RULEBOOK AMERICAN UNIVERSITY INTRAMURALS

Handbook: Intramural Policies and Procedures can be found within the Intramural Sport Participant Handbook. Information on our mission, values, how to create a team, sportsmanship, and playoff details can be found there. This document can be found within the Handbooks and Manuals tab on IMLeagues. Location: Jacobs Field Rosters: Games will be played 7 on 7. (including keeper) -

Roster Minimum: Teams must have a minimum of five (5) players present at game time to avoid a forfeit. Teams may not register unless there are five (5) players on the IMLeagues roster at the time of payment. Roster Maximum: Teams may have an unlimited number of players on a team. Game Day Maximum: Teams may “check in” or “dress” no more than twelve (12) players on their Game Day Roster for any specific game.

CoRec Rosters: There may be no more than four (4) players who play as the same gender on the field/court at any time. Acceptable line-ups are outlined below. 4 Male / 3 Female

Players must check in before each contest with a valid AU ID. Picture must be clear and name match that on IMLeagues. NO AU ID = NO PLAY

Players must be on the printed game sheet for that game. Players must join the team on IMLeagues before the player addition deadline. There are no exceptions.

Equipment: -

Teams must wear like colors. If both teams are wearing the same colors, Intramural (IM) staff will provide pinnies. Shirts MUST be worn underneath pinnies. Jewelry is NOT permitted, including but not limited to necklaces, earrings, facial piercings, rings, bracelets, and watches. Failure to remove jewelry before game start will negatively affect your team’s sportsmanship rating and result in the player being removed from the game until they successfully remove all jewelry.

Exception: medical alert bracelets or necklaces may be worn, provided the player tapes the to the body with the information still accessible. Participants may NOT wear cleats on the Jacobs Field Turf. Sneakers or APPROVED turf shoes only. Intramural Sports will provide a game ball. Teams may check out a ball to warm up with from the Jacobs Fitness Center front desk.

Referee’s Authority: The official has the authority to rule promptly, in the spirit of good sportsmanship, on any situation not specifically covered in the rules. There referee’s decision is final in all matters pertaining to the game. Game Format: -

Each game will consist of two (2) 20-minute halves. Each half will have a running clock. The clock will stop for timeouts, injuries, ejections, disqualifications, or at the Officials/Supervisors discretion. Halftime will be no longer than five (5) minutes.

Coin Flip: -

To begin each game, a coin flip will determine who begin with possession. The home team will call the coin flip coin flip during the captains meeting. If a coin is not available, the referee may ask the captain to play “Odds or Evens”.

Overtime: Regular season or pool play games may end in a tie. If the event a tournament or playoff game ends in a tie, we will advance into an Overtime period.

If a game is tied after regulation, there will be a single five (5) minute overtime Golden Goal period. (The team who scores the next goal will win) A coin flip will determine which team will possess the ball first. The away team will call the coin flip. If the game remains tied after the overtime period, there will be a five (5) player shoot out. Shots will alternate between teams and shots will be taken at the penalty line (top of three-point arc). A coin flip will determine which team will shoot first. The team that scores the most goals after the shoot-out will win. If the game remains tied after the five (5) man shootout, there will be continuous alternating penalty shots. The first team to score an UNASWERED goal will win. Players have had to play during regulation to participate in the shoot-out and all the players on a team’s roster must take a shot before they may go through their roster again in the same order. o In CO-REC games, shooters must alternate between male/female and female/male. Even if not all male shooters have gone yet, a female shooter must follow (essentially making two separate shooting orders).

Time Outs: Each team is entitled to 2 time-outs per game. Mercy Rule: If a team is ahead by the following goals at or inside the corresponding times, the game shall be over:

10 goals at or inside the second half. 7 goals at or inside the final seven (7) minutes. 5 goals at or inside the final two (2) minutes.

Substitutions: Substations may only be made on a stoppage of play, whistles, throw-ins, goal kicks, and corner kicks. Teams may have an unlimited number of substitutions. •

If a player wishes to sub-in, they must be standing at mid field at the time of the stoppage. The player must remain there until some official calls them into play and is recognized by an official. Illegal substitutions may result in an indirect kick at the spot of the ball and a yellow card issued to the player.

Scoring:

A goal is scored when the WHOLE ball crosses the goal line inside of a goal box. A point will be awarded to the opposing team of the goal regardless of who touched the ball last before the ball crossed the line (opposing player, defender or keeper). Boundaries: • A ball will be considered out of play if the ENTIRETY of the ball crosses the end lines or side lines. • When a ball crosses the sideline, a THROW IN will be awarded to the opposing team. • If the OPPOSING team last touched the ball before it crosses the end line, the ball will be awarded to the DEFENDING team’s keeper for a GOAL KICK. • If the DEFENDING team last touched the ball before it crosses the end line, the ball will be awarded to the OPPOSING team for a CORNER KICK. Throw In: The thrower must have both feet on the ground, behind the sideline, and use both hands in one continual motion to deliver the ball from behind and over the head. Offside: There will be no offside infractions. Free Kicks: • •

All free kicks will be classified DIRECT. o A direct kick (arm is pointed straight out in the direction of the kick) is one a goal can be scored without any other player touching the ball prior to entering the goal. During a free kick, opposing players must be at least seven (7) yards from the ball until it is kicked, unless they are standing on their own goal line between the goal posts.

Penalty Kicks: • During a penalty kick, all players except the kicker and opposing goalkeeper shall be within the field of play but outside the penalty area and at least 10 yards from the penalty kick line until the ball is kicked. • The opposing goalkeeper must stand with their feet on the goal line, between the goal posts until the ball is kicked. Lateral movement is allowed but the goalkeeper is not permitted to come off the line by stepping or lunging forward until the ball is touched. • The kicker must kick the ball in one continuous motion. • Re-kicks or Goalie throws will be awarded accordingly based on the faults committed. Corner Kicks: - Players from the defending team must be at least seven (7) yards from the ball until it has been kicked. - Must be kicked from within 1 yard of the corner in which the corner was awarded as determined by the official. Goal Kicks: - Any player of the kicking team may execute the goal kick. - Players opposing the goal kick shall remain outside the penalty area until the ball has cleared the penalty area. Keeper Play: -

A goalkeeper must distribute the ball within six (6) seconds after gaining control. The ball may not be passed directly to the keeper’s hands from the neutral zone by a member of their own team. o If a goalkeeper handles the ball outside of their designated area a direct kick will be rewarded to the opposing team. Outside the penalty area, the goalkeeper becomes a regular field player and all rules that previously would apply to them no longer do.

Slide Tackle: This is a NON CONTACT SPORT. Slide tackling is not permitted under any circumstances. Fouls: The following infractions will result in a DIRECT FREE KICK at the spot of the foul. They may also result in a yellow or red card. • Holding an opponent • Pushing an opponent • Handling the ball, except the keeper in his penalty area. • Fails to maintain a distance of five (5) feet on any kick in. (Repeated offenses = Yellow Card) • Kicking or attempting to kick an opponent (Red Card) • Tripping an opponent (Potential Yellow or Red)

Jumping or throwing himself upon an opponent (Potential Yellow or Red) Charging an opponent in a violent or dangerous manner (Red Card) Striking or attempting to strike an opponent or spitting on an opponent (Red Card) Charging an opponent with the shoulder. (Yellow or Red Card) Sliding at the ball (Automatic Yellow) Sliding at a Player (Red Card)

Yellow and Red Cards: An official may issue yellow or red cards for players demonstrating unsportsmanlike conduct. This includes but is not limited to.

o Using foul language o Verbally assaulting IM Staff o Baiting opponents or verbally assaulting opponents. o Making a mockery of the game, sport, or intramural program. o Threatening IM Staff or intramural participants A player receiving two (2) yellow cards in a match will be ejected. A player receiving one (1) red card will be ejected. All ejected players must leave the playing area and Bender Arena within two (2) minutes. Failure to do so will result in a forfeit for their team. If a player is ejected (from 2 yellows or a single red), their team must finish the game a player down. The IM Staff reserves the right to end a Intramural contest in the event of excessive unsportsmanlike penalties resulting in multiple cards being assessed.
