OVERRIDE | A Billboard Project APPLICATION DEADLINE | May 25, 2017 OVERRIDE | A Billboard Project is a temporary citywide public art exhibition that will activate the 28 digital billboards in Chicago’s City Digital Network (CDN), a sophisticated network of high quality LED digital display units located on City property along Chicago’s expressways. Presented by EXPO CHICAGO and the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), OVERRIDE will be on display from August 28 through September 17, 2017. Situated throughout highly visible public locations, OVERRIDE provides a dynamic opportunity for participating galleries to showcase works by leading international artists beyond EXPO CHICAGO’s primary context of Navy Pier. Each billboard face in Chicago’s CDN rotates eight different 10-second messages. Artworks presented as part of the OVERRIDE exhibition will be displayed throughout the entire network, integrated as one of the eight “flips” within the billboard advertising program. Placing artwork within this context, OVERRIDE takes its name from industry terminology referring to the continuation of an outdoor advertising program beyond a contracted period. EXPO CHICAGO exhibitors may submit existing artworks or new artworks created specifically for this context. All submissions must meet the Chicago CDN display requirements and guidelines outlined in this application, paying close attention to precise image size and resolution specifications.

Galleries may submit more than one artwork for consideration. Please provide a unique application form for each; Submitting options for both landscape and portrait formats is not required, but highly recommended; Only artwork is intended to fill the entire frame of each billboard composition. Image files may not include any text that conveys the name of the artist, title of the artwork and/or gallery affiliation; Acceptance of selected artworks for OVERRIDE will be confirmed in writing by EXPO CHICAGO; Exhibitor is fully responsible for providing final digital files that meet the required specifications, ensuring that all copy and usage rights have been secured; OVERRIDE is governed by the terms and conditions of EXPO CHICAGO, as outlined in the EXPO CHICAGO Regulations; All works must adhere to the City of Chicago CDN Requirements and Guidelines outlined in this application.

When saving from a vector-based program (such as Adobe Illustrator) the “Export for Screens” or “Export As” options must be used Files saved at 72 ppi/dpi will display very clearly in this context. CHICAGO CDN REQUIREMENTS AND GUIDELINES In order for your content to properly appear, please pay close attention to these guidelines: •

If the artwork contains text it should: o Be concise with no more than ten (10) short words o Use bold characters o Minimum font size: 12 pixels Bright colors with low luminosity and high saturation work best Avoid mixing complimentary colors (for example: red and green) Combination of contrasted colors result in better visibility at greater distances White backgrounds or large areas of white do not display well in this context and will not be accepted
