P 19,580, Patrasi H im al. The Anglo-W elsh Expedition consisted of Edwin H am m ond, leader, Dewi Jones, John Cheesm ond, John Vincent, Dr. Ieuan Jones and me as deputy leader. We were to m ake an attem pt on the m ain peak of the P atrasi H im al (21,742 feet; often referred to as P atrasi North), ju st west of the K anjiroba massif. W e flew from K ath m andu to Jum la, approached and set up Base Cam p in the valley west of the m ain peak on O ctober 3. We did not like the approach from here to the south col and so, after reconnaissance moved Base Cam p into the valley south of the peak, intending to go over an 18,500-foot pass to the south col and the sum m it. Cam p I had been established on this col when from O ctober 15 to 18 continuous heavy snow fell and altered conditions on the m ountain. We continued the snowplough work but, after establishing Cam p III, were only able to climb a peak of 19,580 feet on O ctober 28 before running out of food. Food had been very restricted by the payload of the aircraft th a t had flown us in. The sum m it of P atrasi H im al rem ains untro d d en after some four attem pts. DAVID N.
