Executive summary

The project assigned to us was to make a habitat for mealworms to keep them alive for a week. Our group only had 25 Hampel dollars to spend, which limited our design to only a few materials. We obtain our materials based on how many Hampel dollars we spend. An example is, a 2-liter costs 2 dollars. The fewer dollars spent, the better, because it affects your overall score in the end. Our solution was a cost efficient design that only used two mealworms. It consisted of a clear plastic cup, oatmeal, and an apple square. These materials solved the problem and were able to keep the mealworms alive for a week.

The detailed design information

Our design is an ecosystem made for mealworms in a plastic 8in by Sin cup. We have two mealworms, an apple which the mealworms get their water, and oatmeal. We don't have any soil because mealworms like burrowing in their own food. The plastic cup is being covered with tape at the top of the cup and has two holes in tape for air. The cup is filled with lOOml of oatmeal and has one 14 of an app on top while the meal worms burrow through the oatmeal.

Our design did meet the design requirements. Our design was below $25. According to our ~ background research notes, mealworms get their water from fruits and vegetables like apples and ~ potatoes. In our design, we used oatmeal because mealworms like to burrow in their food. \jJ Finally, we put air slits in our design because we needed to give the mealworms some air so they

could survive. The defence of design #2

~

In conclusion, it was an overall success. We had two mealworms and they both survive~ but we could barely see them because they were burrowing deep in the oatmeal. We had one .,~ apple which later turned moldy and old. At the beginning our mealworms weighed only 0.4 V\ grams but gained 0.1 grams throughout the week. In the end of the week the mealworms skin g color was darker but still hadn't turned into to beetles just yet. yt
